hi, I have a 1080p video file and want to play it on my pc. VLC keeps slowing down (its not a great HD player) and divx says file not supported and media player wont work either.

So what software (preferable free if possible) to play HD content on a pc??
I think my main problem lies witht the file being a .mlk file.

thanks:)

Unforunately, to play these high resolution, high bitrate releases
you will need a relatively powerful cpu and a few pieces of software that
you might not already have. To help make your life easier, we are
going to walk you through it.

As mentioned before, you need a decent computer to play this. We'd recommend
at least the equivalent of a pentium 4. The cpu constraints are why we
do not release these ripped at 1080p. Not everyone yet has the hardware
for 720p, even less have the hardware for 1080p.

So, you are sitting there wondering how the hell you play this, eh?
Well first you need to have a video player of any kind. I like media
player classic, which you can grab from here: http://x264.nl/

Then you need to download and install the Combined Community Codec Pack,
which you can download here: http://www.cccp-project.net/

If you find your hardware can't play it quite quick enough with CCCP, try
to find a copy of CoreAVC from your favourite 0day source (but you still
need some of the software from CCCP, so keep that on there).

Last but not least you should have AC3Filter installed,
which you can find right here: http://ac3filter.net/

A Pentium D is the minimum needed for 720p... I think you need a Core 2 duo for 1080p content.

People seem to put far too much emphasis on the hardware needed to play HD I can play these files using my laptop which is a 1.7ghz pentium m, 1gb ram, win xp and a Go5200fx 64mb. Uses most of the cpu but plays them fine.

Depends on the codec. For .TS 1080p, a single core 2ghz is fine. But for H264 you need a dual core CPU. My 4200x2 AMD plays back H264 1080p with no stuttering.

Yep he said .MKV which is compressed... and I think for that you would definetly need a Core 2 duo... my Pentium D sometimes struggles to play certain high bit-rate movies... My Core 2 duo plays the same videos flawlessly.

Transport streams in 1080p would also be around 30gb :p

I played 1080p of commando fine, 1080p of the matrix was ok (just).
my pc eats 720p easily:p

EDIT: i am trying the file in question (band of brothers) whilst WOW is on. guess my cpu isnt good enough for both:p

No. You don't. My 4200x2 plays back 1080p h264 well below 100%x2
Even if a slower PC stutters with Blu-Ray, that can be solved with using a videocard with HD acceleration (ATI 2600 Pro)

Hopefully new cards will support H264, currently it requires CPU power.

Hope you're joking, otherwise just fan boy comments. My 4400x2 @ 2.6ghz is something around 40% per core for H264 1080p. Hardly loading it out.
