Toying with the idea of getting a PS3 for a few games that is exclusive to the console, namely Uncharted (thanks Tomb Raider!).

Which version to buy, if new? There seems to be a few variant out, there is the super slim, the slim and various sizes?

Unless PS4 is backward compatible then I will wait, anyone know if it has been confirmed yet?

Any variant of the Slim PS3, youll be pushed to find it new though through the normal reputable channels. Id probably say try MM...

PS4 and backwards compatibility in the true sense is a no, but theres expectation to use a streaming gaming service, but we have no details on that and when it might turn up, what games/platforms it will support and more importantly the costs (if any) involved.

I recently bought a new super slim model to replace my original 60gb after it gave up on me. Its very small, cool and quiet but its also built from cheap plastic and doesn't have that slick slot loading drive (just a crappy manual sliding plastic cover over the top loading drive bay)

The old fat PS3 was so loud and hot it doubled as a fan heater so the new one is a decent improvement in that regard. I got a base 12gb model with no hard drive and just installed the old 60gb drive from my old ps3. I found 60gb to be plenty and I have a pretty large library of PS3 games so the 12gb model might be enough if you only want to one or two games as stated above. If you do want to install a hard drive in it later, you'll need to buy the mounting caddy as it isn't supplied unfortunately. They take standard 2.5" hard drives.

I put a hard drive in my super slim without a caddy and its been fine.

I've even moved it from room to room, held it vertically and its been fine. Just don't hold it with the hdd side pointing down and you're good.

Yes, just slide the side off and put it in. you need to line it up if you don't have a caddy (you don't need one) but it's easy. I wedged a folded up piece of card around mine too to hold it still.

If you're intending to get a PS4 fairly soon after release anyway, I'd just go for a pre-owned slim console. They're reliable, quiet and you'll get a HDD as opposed to having to add your own to a 12GB new one.

Whatever is cheap!

Gameswise, I'd say plump for the God of War games (specifically HD remakes and 3), Dead Space 1, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, and Bioshock. Probably a few more to add to that list!

Agreed. Uncharted 2 was probably the biggest leap forward for a sequel this generation, but it's great to see where they came from, and Uncharted 1 is a great game in its own right. They're standalone stories but there are little references across the series so it makes sense to play them in order, and plus you can pick them up for next to nothing on eBay...

If you really are desperate for one then id say grab any old second hand one. PS4 is on its way and I dont see the point in buying a new PS3 for a few games this late down the line...
