Hello Fella's

am goin to attempt to build my new PC, much to the amusment of my kid bro. am quite new to the forum's and need bit help buildin my first rig  it is:

CPU: AMD Phenom 9550 x4 (from another machine but possibly upgrading to a 940be soon)
RAM: 2x2gb OCZ Gold DDR2 (1066mhz)
MoBo: Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4 AMD 790X
Gfx: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB
HDD: 2x320GB
Case: Antec 300
Cooling: Standard case fan's x2, CPU & Gfx after-market coolers

i'm struggling with a PSU tho. can never quite judge how much much i need :(

if any one can give me any pointers that would be great. also any recommendations to the kit already listed would be helpful.

thanks in advance

Hi,

PSU wise you want something around 5-550 W or 7-750 if you think you might add a 2nd gfx card later, good makes are BeQuiet, Corsair, Zalman, Coolermaster and PC Power & Cooling. You can pick up the 750W PC P&C for a very reasonable £90 its only small drawback is its not modular

Rest looks good, HDD wise Id look at the Wester Digital Cavair Blacks (500gb) Id also recomend 3 in a RAID5 set up, CPU cooler wise look at the titan fenrir or sunbeam

The BeQuiet or Corsair psu's are great - 650W or 750w would be fine. If you're on a budget then the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W.

EDIT: Beaten to it. (prefer that sig Thrifles ;) )

A quality 450-500w psu will be more than enough. The rig in my siggy only draws 274w at the wall and that's when running Orthos and Fur stability test at the same time.

thanks for the rec's lads :)

i'm pullin towards a Coolermaster Silent Pro Modular 700W Power Supply as its modular and SLI/crossfire ready (i've haerd there good and reliable).

@ 95thrifles - a friend recommended the MoBo as he reckons it supports AM2+ sockets, which is what both CPU's are. is he wrong? which MoBo would you recommend instead?

apologies for being a noob lol. it'a pretty daunting task first time an i jus wanna make sure i don't encounter any major probs. thanks again

Youre referring to 1st post when i said its AM3/DDR3 its not, but theres a very similarly named one which is, apologies for confusion, Ive changed my post now

yeah, the fenir is wat i was lookin at. will probs order one today as they're cheap!

on the HDD front i already have the 2 360GB's (they're are seagates @ £28 each) :( could do with another one tho as i'm a nut for organisation hehe. will defo check out the wester's

anyway, i think am gonna go for the Coolermaster 700w silent modular. it looks like it can do the job :P

thanks again
