Which PSU?

Hi OcUK,

I've decided to buy another PSU as my Be Quiet 850w has started making a strange noise, and I don't want to continue using it incase it goes bang and takes out my other components in the process.

The e-tailer that I bought it from has issued an RMA number for me, but the guy said he doubts that it will be replaced because of the problem I've described to him, which is nonsence imo but what can I do?

Anyway, I'd ideally want a 750 or 850w unit, but I can't decide which one to go for.

I'm currently looking at either the Corsair HX850, Fractal Design Newton R2 800w, Silverstone Strider 850w or Seasonic M12D 750w, but I can't decide which one to go for..

If anyone here can recommend which one to go for out of those lot, or if there is any other PSU's that are better than the ones I've listed it would be much appreciated if you could assist me in my purchase..

Thanks in advance

I've got a Corsair HX850 and am very happy with it - extremely quiet.

The only extremely minor grumble is that although its modular, two of the six PCI-E power connectors are pre-wired and a bit shorter than the modular leads so I had to use the modular leads for my setup (hardly a crime though!)

Corsair hx 750/850 w are excellent psu's, another brand ive always liked using was enermax, have a 620w enermax liberty modular in my second rig which i may actually switch over to replace the thermaltake toughpower 750w in my main system.

@Superewza, the noise is happening when the PC isn't even switched on, and the PSU fan isn't spinning, so I'm 110% sure there isn't any wires hitting the fan!

It's a strange hissing sound, which also pulsates as well, it's very slight though, and can only really be heard properly when you put your ear up against the PSU, I've checked the PSU's in all my other PC's and they don't make any noises like this, even the 6 year old crappy generic 350w PSU I use for leaktesting WC bits doesn't make any noise like the Be Quiet is making.

I've already posted a thread explaining the sounds I'm hearing but I didn't get any decent replies from anyone, so I've decided to start the RMA proceedure with the PSU as it shouldn't be making this noise when it isn't even running..

Just so you understand what I'm saying here, the noise happens when the mains switch at the wall is turned on for the PSU and the PSU power switch is also turned on, but the PC isn't running at all, and if I press the power switch off on the PSU the noise dissapears completely...

I think that I'm just gonna get the HX850, although tbh I really don't like the flat modular cables, as I will be sleeving them, and those ones wouldn't look right I don't think, however, the 2 hard wired PCIE wires is perfect for me, as I'm only using one graphics card, so that means I won't have to use the flat modular PCIE cables..

Thanks for the replies guys, If anyone has anything else to add that would be much appreciated.

Well, that Antec PSU can be ruled out, I'm not about to go hacking my TJ07 up just so I can use that power supply!!!

@ Pneumonic, this is what the guy at the e-tailers said it probably was when I called them today.

The guy I talked with on the phone was really nice actually, he said that the PSU will more than likely be replaced, which is a lot more than the guy that emailed me said.. He told me that he doubted it would get replaced going by what I described to him...

I'm now unsure about spending so much on the Corsair, as I've thought about it a little more, and I only really need a PSU to see me through while my current one is being RMA'd, after which I'll probably sell the temporary one..

But, at the same time, I'm thinking if I buy another decent PSU just now and just keep it, then I could sell on the replacement Be Quiet one, as I only bought that PSU 6 months ago, and it cost quite a bit, so for it to be showing symptoms of failing already, I'd say that's really poor, so it's probably better if I just buy another high end PSU..

Has anyone else here had any bad experience with Be Quiet?

I notice OcUK have stopped stocking them, so that got me thinking maybe they've been having a lot of people RMA'ing them, and that's why they've stopped stocking them?
