Am looking for any racing game which will allow online play between myself and friend while online with AI cars on the track as well.

Scope for strategy also important so probably more of a simulation with pit stops and longer races would be great.

Open Wheel racing preferred.

Many Thanks.

I'd have to say Live for Speed is exactly what you are looking for :)

Really easy to set up online play, and the open wheel cars on their are really fun :) Currently it has 5 different open wheeled cars (Sort of like a go-kart thing, formula bmw, formula v8, f1 and another which I cant remember right now).

There is a demo available too which has the formula bmw in it and you can set up a server on it with your friends to see whether you all like it or not. There is always rFactor but ive always found that a bloomin' pain if I want a quick online game compared to LFS. It's still good though, and loads of mods.

Thanks all for the replies.

rFactor or LFS then (Thought it would be one of the 2).

Does anyone know how many AI drivers you can have online with each?

Also, is the computer clever when it comes to Pit stop strategys etc?

Does either have dynamic weather? Me thinks im asking too much now :)

LFS is upto 20 players i think, so you and your friend + 18 AI's :D

Rfactor or LFS S2.

I would say RFactor as I personally prefer the game, Race League/Online & have done since the beginning.
For variation no game beats RFactor, With Hundreds of tracks & loads of mods the game just gets better & better month after month. If you cannot find a Mod to suit you then you shouldn't be driving.
I League Caterhams & name the Cats as the Number one mod as they feel exceptional to drive/race.

LFS s2 has a more steady Club feel about the game but Quickly becomes boring as there are no new tracks & mods released. It does drive brilliantly though but personally i just prefer the mods I drive on RF.

Setting up RF for some online fun with a mate is a piece of ****, You just start a server add A.I then your mate joins & you race, You have admin control etc & from then on you just race/laugh/crash & laugh some more.

Yes I Do have both RF & LFS s2 & RBR. Should Never talk about PC racing without mentioning Richard Burns Rally, Single player though without RBR.net but still you can set times & go from there adding to it with Teamspeak banter.

Neither game has weather. Some rfactor tracks have special wet or snowy versions with less grip, but it's not quite the same thing as dynamic weather. What rFactor does have is dynamic day/night cycle which looks nice.

Engine sounds are still a problem in LFS. FWIW I don't think racing the AI is especially rewarding in either game. Better to find a good online league.

Urgh! Go-Karting!? Karting please.

Does rFactor still have a healthy online community for pick-up races? I've just got back into GTR2 in a big way after being in leagues for years and there's 1 or two half-decent races a night and thats about it :(

If rFactor is a bit more active I may go and pick it up tonight.

RFactor is still Very active online. There is not a time day or night when you cannot pick up a race. Loads of publics & loads of leagues
It'll be active for some time yet as well as the Sim racing & modding scene based around RF is Massive.

And with a new Officially Licensed mod coming very soon;)

LFS IMO, its generally got a decent player base online, so you can usually get a good scrap online without the destruction derby you would normally get.

You can have up to 20 cars on track at any time, meanign you can have yourself with another 19 AI cars if you want, providing your PC can handle it.

Strategy plays quite a big part in it when you are doing longer races, especially considering on faster cars your tyres will go off very quickly if you do not look after them. In *** F1 car ill usually struggle to get 10 laps out of a set of tyres before the cars sliding all over the place, and on a race car youll get about 16-18 laps before needing replacements fitted.

Many thanks to all of you for the VERY informative posts.

I see rFactor has a Try before you buy option, is there a similiar option for Live For Speed?

I have looked on their site yet cannot see anything.

EDIT: I Wasn't looking hard enough.

LFS does have a demo.
