Hi,

I need 8GB of ram so i can run a specific program that devours memory.

I have an asus a8n-sli premium motherboard.
I currently have 2x1GB of corsair XMS something or other, but im not sure what it is... and i dont have a clue what all this DDR1 DDR2 and DDR3 is.

Can someone tell me what RAM I need, and what the best price/performance ratio memory might be. I dont need the fastest RAM in the world, the program im trying to run in linux is called imageJ (a java based image processing application) and isnt performance intense, it just requires a large amount for what im trying to do. But I also use my PC occassionally for a bit of gaming (racing sims), so i dont want to be stuck with RAM that really sucks for that. Equally i want to spend <£125.

I'm pretty sure getting 8GB of DDR 1 is going to be not worth it. Cost wise especially.

I don't even know if they made DDR 1 sticks big enough to make up 8GB of RAM to be honest.

ARGGG... that really sucks

well thanks for your help guys.

I cant be doing with upgrading mobo etc atm, no time. I will try and find a computer at university that I can use instead.

cheers... appreciated :)

btw 32 bit operating systems can only use 3.2ish gb of ram. If you slot in 4gb ram on a 32bit OS you will lose around 0.8GB

32Bit OSes can use 4GB of RAM total. It depends on how much graphics RAM and cache other components have so 3.2GB isn't strictly true. If you had 4GB RAM and 128MB graphics RAM, you'd end up with about 3.8GB with cache taken in to account.

I read the imageJ help and it said 8GB of ram would work fine with it on linux. So thats the route i needed to take. Stupid motherboard :P
