Hi

Im buying a AMD X2 4400+ and I was confused about which ram to get with it to overclock.
I'm looking at G-Skill, PC400 which was reccomended to me for overclocking but I noticed the CAS settings are slower than say PC3200 which is the same exact cost. is it standard that for overclocking if you need higher frequency ram but you miss out on the low CAS ratings?

Cheers

Generally there isn't much ram running at DDR500 or above that I know of that match the latency settings of the best DDR400 (PC3200) RAM. In the end you have to balance your need for high HTT settings with low RAM latencies.

In my (limited) testing with my Crucial Ballistix PC3200 RAM I ranged from 200Mhz to 240Mhz with the RAM. The latencies rose from 2-2-2-6 to 2.5-3-3-10 (iirc). My benchmarks were better with the RAM at 2-2-2-6 even though the RAM frequency was 40Mhz lower. If I went higher in HTT I may have come across a RAM frequency with those higher latencies that eventually gave me better benchmarks but I didnt have time to mess with very low multipliers on my CPU.

PC4000 memory on average will get you to 265-270mhz on 1:1 (some ppl will get higher) , any higher than that you will need to use a divider.

Using a divider with an A64 system does not seriously affect performance so keep in mind.
