Which RAM setup is best?

Hi.

I have 2 sticks of RAM installed on my motherboard. I have a 2GIG DDR2 800 and a 1GIG DDR2 667. They run with Dual-channel architecture.

Is this the best setup?

Would it just be better and faster to just run with the faster DDR2 800? and only have 2GIG of RAM installed.

Or would having 3GIG of RAM make up for it.

My motherboard is G31T-M.

3 sticks on a new mobo with 4 slots wont run in Dual Channel, only on 3 slotted NF2 Mobo if the 2 smaller sticks added up to same as the 1 larger stick.

Not sure, I imagine that the 1x2gb and 1x1gb (2 sticks in total) will run in dual channel @ pc5300 (667mhz) just fine. As to whether or not 1x2gb stick (non dual channel) at PC6400 (800mhz) is better I don't know.

Where is your FSB at? its its well over 333 then it might be worth trying just the faster 1x2gb stick?

i dont have 3 sticks so your answer is a bit confusing. and my motherboard only has 2 slots.

Your initual post was confusing so best I could do, I did not want to say that but will now :p

Do you have a total of 3 or 5 sticks of Ram ?

Edit, if your Mobo does Dual channel and only has 2 Slots (weird) it will need 2 sticks the same Size, thats it basically.

So as I have said before in other threads, its been shown in reviews that 2GB of Memory in Dual Channel Mode (on modern Mobos not NF2 as it was only a 12% Gain over Single Channel) it is better in nearly all benches and real life use than 3GB in Single Channel Mode.

You have hit the nail on the head . The 2 sticks i have installed run in dual channel @ pc5300 (667mhz).

My query was would it be faster to just run 1x2Gb at PC6400 (800mhz). My FSB is 1333 Mhz.

The 1st line of my post says i have only 2 sticks installed. thats not confusing.

Looks like you own 3 to 5 sticks, so is confusing, you admited above you may have not posted too well

There is little benefit to running the Memory above the CPU FSB speed apart from some Memory Benches.

Your CPU is 1333 so really your Memory only needs be 667mhz, then if you overclock thats another story.

If you can tell me in my post where it says i have 3 - 5 sticks then can you tell me so i can sleep tonight.

Are you sure they run in dual channel currently? I was under the impression you needed at least the same ram size to run in dual channel?

Get some benchmarking programs, and test different configurations out?

I tell you something more, thats my help over for you, get it from someone else.

ok mate. You go and sleep it off.

If i could figure out how to post a CPU-Z screenshot i would. This is what it says ... Type DDR2. Channels# Dual. Size 3072 MBytes. DC mode Symmetric. DRAM Frequency 332.5 MHz. FSB : DRAM 1:1. CAS# Latency (CL) 5.0 Clocks. RAS# to CAS# Delay 5 clocks. RAS#Precharge 5 clocks. Cycle time 15 clocks. Command Rate 2T.

Hope that makes sense to someone because i haven't a clue what any of that means.

They'll be running in 'Flex' mode.

It's meant to be something between single and dual channel, but it's nearer to single channel.

The difference between single and dual channel is pretty small anyway. I run three 1gb sticks in 'Flex' and my Folding is no slower than it was with two 1gb sticks in dual-channel.

@ mralw, your Cheek when peeps are trying to help you esp with confusing (admited yourself above) info will not get you far on last long on these forums.

no problem. But tell me where in my 1st post does it say i have 3-5 sticks of RAM?

The 1st line says i have 2 sticks of RAM. So you didn't really help.

I had to read it twice, but I understood what he meant pretty quickly :)

I had 3x512Mb sticks on an abit NF7 running in Dual-Channel (although I admit it wasn't 100% stable) so it is possible to run with different amounts.

To be honest I'd just sell the DDR667 stick and only keep the DDR800, 2Gb is enough for most things. Then if you need more, find the exact model and buy another stick later on so you'll have 2x2Gb DDR800.

/me user setting to ignore

good. Because you didn't read my post properly, refuse to answer my questions where it says i have 3-5 sticks of RAM, then post confusing answers.

Have another drink mate....
