Which router do I need?

So I need to replace my BT Homehub router.

My internet is one of the old ones where it comes in and goes into a white box on the wall (the modem?), then a RJ45 comes out and go into a BT hub.

I have a newer BT home hub which has a built in modem which is no good to me as the WAN port is a weird socket and isn't compatible with the white box on the wall.

What router do I need to just replace the current BT hub if I am keeping the modem on the wall?

Thanks

Can you take some photos of what you are seeing? The newer BT Hubs are designed to do the job of the white modem on the wall, which presumably connects to your phone line - is there a reason you want to continue to use the white modem?

You bin the OpenReach modem on the wall. Had a similar question when I upgraded my Mum's internet the other week.

The cable going into the white modem on the wall is RJ11, the socket going into the new BT modem is similar but NOT RJ45. I can’t just straight swap it.

Rj11 from wall to socket labelled broadband, not WAN.

Oh yes, that fits..

Question, the old BT hub, it's can't be use as a switch can it? As in the location of where it is at the moment is away from where the white modem is meaning there would need a lot of new cables, so the easiest thing is to replace the old BT hub with a Switch.

It can be used as just as switch but you'd need some fannying around and it's probably just as cheap/easy to grab a ten quid TP link switch.

Fannying around = disable DHCP, re-IP addressing. Just get a £10 TP Link switch.

Yeah, going to try that first, it will not far off getting a bunch of new Lan cables. Guess I will try again tomorrow and report back with a new Hub.

It may be psychological but I like the fact I've got rid of one ancient device + plug as well. The Open Reach model must have been in my mum's 10 years at least.

Yeah, I like it better all in one. But I am not using less devices due to how and where I set up the current old BT Hub, that needs to be a Switch there (behind the TV) and the modem itself is the other corner of the room.

Small detail but at least the new modem works.

If it helps nudge you over the line on my TP Link switch recommendation, they are seriously dirt cheap, and all ultra low energy :D (IEEE802.3az)

Infinitely more better than reusing a home hub. Good shout. Love the metal Netgear stuff I didn't realise it was almost the same price (edit: just realised I bought the TP Link stuff in a rush and it was on offer)

its really strange, I went to look for the GS108 as I have that one already but found the 308 almost half price. Googled a review comparison and show the 308 to be better too.
