Which router do you use for your PS3?

DG834GT, more or less similar to the one you had. When you say the PN did not work do you mean via WiFi?

Yup, I'm reasonably* able when it come to this kind of thing so was able to enter all the correct settings into the router and PS3.

BTHomeHub.

Connects wirelessly, but it's less than a metre away. No connection issues at all :)
 
BT HomeHub 2, with a D-Link DAP-1522 Wireless N bridge at the TV for all devices.

The HomeHub is surprisingly good. Had no issues with gaming or streaming.
 
The problem with the Netgear DG834PN you bought might have been down to a buggy firmware, where it had problems with wireless encrytion on PS3. I had that problem when I upgraded my firmware a while ago and to fix it I had to roll it back to the one before the newest release and it worked fine.

The problem was that my PS3 could not connect to my router with WPA or WPA2 encryption and would only connect to the router with WEP or if it was unsecure. It was fine before the firmware upgrade and was fine again after I downgraded it again, though I don't know what the cause was I know it was the firmware that screwed it up because it was the only thing I changed.
