I am wanting to get a Synology DiskStation DS212j NAS in the future and was going to get a new Router at the same time, but my old Linksys is giving up the ghost so needing to buy a new Router now.

I mainly game on my PC and Xbox (wired), but also want to be able to stream iPlayer to the TV and radio to the digital radio so need a Router with good QoS to keep my ping down while others are on the internet doing stuff. We have Wireless N and G stuff to connect so would it be best to get a simultaneous dual band Router?

What would be your recommendations for a Router that's on the compatible list for the Synology DiskStation DS212j?

I have read the Billion 7800 is good, does not having 5GHz matter?

Oh, I am on Be 24mbps ADSL with fast path on.

5GHz, or not, will only matter if you have anything that's capable of connecting at 5GHz.

The compatibility list only refers to routers that can be auto-configured. Almost any router should be fine (as far as the DiskStation is concerned) if you’re capable of changing a few settings.

I can’t think of any good reason not to use a Billion 7800 if it fits your budget. If nothing else you’ll be able to keep on using it if/when you upgrade to a FTTC connection.

Thanks for the reply. I've been looking at reviews of the 7800n and it looks good (well physically it doesn't but u know what I mean). Really want it but can't afford it with Xmas around the corner and I don't think I need it until I get the Diskstation which I also can't afford right now.

I've got a Linksys E3000 router and WUSB600N clients with my DS212j, it's working great. 5GHz definitely helps the transfer speeds though - I get 19-21 MBps on 5GHz and 9.5-10 on 2.4GHz (sequential, transferring a 1.5 GB MKV).

Did you decide on a router in the end |TIMMY|? Looking to get the same NAS and I doubt my WRT54GS is up to the task too...

ps3ud0
