hi i am about to buy another sat nav unit for my car! i am interested in either the navman f20 or the Garmin StreetPilot c550. Need some opinon's, deff need a in built rechargable battery also full post code search to at least 7-8 digits.

Neither.
Every test I've seen in magazines like STUFF and T3 those units don't do very well where Tom Tom always comes out top.
My mates has got a Garmin and he's put it back in the drawer.

Another vote for TT. They're incredibly cheap now (£150 for the TTOne) and widely supported. I've tried a few sat navs at work and I definately prefer the TT by a long way.

cant comment on the specific navman model you've suggested

but i currently own a navman icn520 and hate it !

other navman users have reported the same problems that i've had. the Signal reception is terrible, it wont pick up a signal of any sort indoors, and it takes ages to lockon when you do get a signal. Its been known for me to hang the thing out of the window to get a better signal its that sensitive

tom tom users on the other hand have no such problems ..

Yup just go for a TT1 mate. I get to play with garmins/tt/medion/garmin at work and the TomTom's just flat out work the best. Theres a reason they're the market leaders and thats they're so easy to use, and they just work!
Now the TT1 is easily available at about £150 theres really no reason to go for a cheaper unit, you will only regret after a week of trying to use the navman/garmin/medion.
The newer garmins are the only things close to TT atm and they're atm more expensive, and imo not as intuitive to use still.

I'm happy with TomTom on a PDA the TomTom maps seem very usefull.

One thing is not to rely 100% on postcodes most times there great, if you can make sure you have the address as well, (I've been lazy in the past and just writen down a post code for somewhere and it might have been too new or something)

TomTom One V2 imo, i was walking down a road the other day after dropping mrs's car at a garage for work to be done. As i was walking to get a lift back home i thought i could hear a voice, stopped looked around....nothing...carried on, heard it again so checked i hadn't pressed a button by accident on my mobile, hadn't.... carried on, when stopping for a wee against a fence i heard a womens voice say "turn around when possible" Then with a giggle because of the situation i was in (penis in hand wee'ing) realised i had left the satnav turned on and the fact it could still get a signal in my pocket whilst also in a holder that was zipped shut. This convinced me even more that TomTom One V2 is a great buy :)

yeah ive had a few.... there is no point getting anything other that a tomtom...they really are great...

I prefer the Garmin StreetPilot 550 to any TomTom I've used.

Tomtom = the ipod of sat nav - the trendy one to have but not necessarily the best.

how true

my navman has vastly different signal strength between out of the window and inside the car, and difference again inside the car under the window, and inside the car under the roof.

its signal strength is terrible and cant any signal at all indoors.

just bought the tom tom one version 2 with europe and uk maps with p&p for £169 bargain!!!!

 I got one for Christmas and the cheapest we could find was £220 though I saw them in the sales for £200.

Damn fine bit of kit.

1 other thing to mention as well. my navman is terrible for holding its charge. if i charge it up, switch it off and leave it in my glovebox, the battery has drained within a week. not very usefull when you get stuck in a jam on your way home from work and need satnav to find you another route home

With the tom tom one, if i purchase it will i ever have to subscribe to anything like previously?? i.e £££ per month, and how long will i be able to use this tom tom? untill it breaks :) because if you can update the map/speed camera locations there would be no other reason to get a new one for years to come!
