Hi :)

I know these threads pop up quite regulary but my dads after one which he's going to buy with his GoldFish card vouchers, meaning it has to be from either Comet or Currys. Price up to £250.

Going off past recommendations etc I'd say the TomTom One XL for £199.99. What does everyone else think?

Cheers :)

Dunno what the current models are or whether you can get them in currys or comet but a few months ago I got rid of my tom tom one for a garmin nuvo 300. Far better to use and lots of good POIs to get off the net. The unit itself is far more compact and the suction mount is better. Mine was £170 from asda. Looking to get one of these bigger screened ones soon though.

I use them for 10 hours a day, 5 days a week so get a pretty good feel for them:)

I'll get him to have a play with one. He whats bluetooth hands free now as well which that one doesn't have sadly.

Favourite after having a play is the Garmin Nuvi 610T for £239.99 from Comet.

I love my Nuvi, much better IMO than the equivilent TomTom, but not sold on every street corner hence not as popular :)

The Navman F20 usually gets resonable praise from what i've seen.
Its decent enough but I wouldn't touch one if I was happy to spend up to £250 as there are much better units out there.

I've got an F20 myself and I'm happy enough with it in a "for what it cost it does a good enough job" kind of way. I paid £100 for mine.

As a good pointer -my son works as an audio fitter at halfords & fits satnavs almost every day, he gets the least faults/failures/returns etc. with Tomtom

Another TomTom One recomendation here. It's a great little piece of kit, especially with the Pocketgps speed camera database installed :D

Couldn't disagree with your son more!

Garmins are far more reliable than Tom Tom's. This is also backed up by Garmins no nonsense returns policy.

stay away from road angel, i find it crap even compared to my old mda based co-pilot!

The sister company of where I work, fix Tom Toms a lot. I was talking with the lead engineer the other week about Sat Navs, he said Tom Toms seem to suffer from a stock fault, when used with the incar charger it over volts and blows a lot of capacitors inside. He didnt seem too keen on Tom Tom as a brand.

I've got Tom Tom installed on my PDA phone, I find it 'okay.'

Just to give you an idea - Tom Tom's are the best selling Sat Nav's in the world.

And Vauxhalls are among the top selling cars in the UK, it doesn't mean they are actually any good ;)

You can buy a TomTom everywhere, but it doesn't follow that they are the best, they are cheaper though...

Couldn't have put it better. They've done well to develope the brand name so that when most people like my Nan thinks of Sat Nav they think, TomTom.

Front runner still is the Garmin Nuvi 610T, got a week or so before the vouchers arrive so if anyone fancies throwing a spanner in the works please do so.

  • Nice big screen e.g. 4.3" widescreen - isn't too bothered about it being compact.
  • Full postcode search
  • Built in Bluetooth phone.
  • Don't need Europe etc.

Cheers :)

For the past year, I've been using a Garmin Nuri 310 Deluxe (European Maps and TMC Traffic included). As a navigation tool, I've been very impressed with it and rarely got lost while using it. It has had a few problems like the power button breaking and can only be used when plugged in and also the TMC can be a little hit and miss especially the more north you get. When the TMC has worked it has saved me big time!

I've considering replacing it with a TomTom 720 as this seems to tick more boxes then the Garmin Nuri 670 (or what ever model it is).
