Which search engine did you use before Google/Bing?

I think I was using Altavista and Yahoo.
That brings back a lot of memories, I can't even remember when Altavista shut down and I think I did my first yahoo search for years the other day (trying to find a specific style of gate latch and google and MS search were only bringing up about 4 relevant results).

It's been a long while but I think it was Yahoo because I used to troll the chat rooms.

Pretty much all, but AOL mainly. Anyone remember Splatterball?

Oh dear the good ol' days of AOL dial-up:

Welcome to AOL, Goodbye!
The above is what the AOL sounds played, it was the Welcome sound for when you connect followed very quicky by been disconnected, eg the Goodybe part :D

You could spend 15 minutes sometimes just trying to get on the dam thing and when you finally did you would often question yourself was it worth the effort :p

As for search engines in the early days before Google was mainstream, I used Ask Jeeves, Altavista, All The Web and Yahoo!

Indeed, back in the day, downloading a neekid pic would take 10 mins, and fill up a whole floppy disk. That was a revelation compared to finding grot mags hidden in hedges!

Reminds me of that episode from The Simpsons where comic book guy is downloading images on his dial-up and you can see the image slowly trying to load one horizontal line at a time from top to bottom :p

I remember wondering why images loaded top to bottom and not the other way...

Lots of memories flooding back (good ol Netscape), I think Northern Lights was up there as one of the first I used properly. Back in the day I'm sure there wasn't all that much to find, you knew the website you were going to or you didn't :p
