As above currently i use Eset smart security have used this for the past couple of years, i guess it works fine because i have been fortunate enough not to have got any viruses.
My question is really are there any good free alternatives that are just as good as a paid for suite.
Do i really need a security suite or will just a virus killer suffice?

How do you know you haven't got any viruses, it may be that Eset doesn't have a detection for it yet?

While an AV will help with most viruses, it won't help protect you against any of the threats below.

Zero-Day Attack
Drive-by Downloads
Phishing Attacks
Keyloggers
Search Engine Poisoning
Rootkits
Rogue Security Software
Ransomware
Denial of Service (DoS) Attack
Botnets

;)

Mmmm alright then let me assume i have no virus on my pc as everything seems normal, my bank balances are fine, i have yet to meet my clone, and wife has not left me yet. So looking on the bright side i will say i have no virus on my pc. i do also run malawarebytes etc.

what i did not see after your sweeping comments is that you failed to recommend anything positive in reply to my thread for example what do you suggest i use to protect myself (please don't say "a rubber :) )

ok thanks for the replies eset smart security v7 will do for now along with malawarebytes. if i did have to move i think kaspersky would get my vote.
