Which Settlers game?

Hi there! I haven't played any Settlers game and i am thinking of buying one to see if it fits;) But i am overwhelmed by the choices , since as i understand it we are at number 7 already! I don't want to spend too much since i may not like it. Any suggestions? Gamersgate has an offer right now. Are these Settlers game any good?
 
S7 sucks (Paths to a Kingdom) and isn't Settlers at all. It's how Civ would be if they made Civ an FPS :p

Other than that, S1 is still my favourite, but its really too old to recommend now. S2 I think got an anniversary edition with upgraded graphics, so you could try that?

S3 onwards they tinkered with the formula a lot, but S3 and S4 are still good games.

I haven't played S5 or S6, but like I said, avoid S7.

The Settlers: Heritage of Kings = 5 Demo
The Settlers: Rise of an Empire = 7 Demo


Have not played settlers since settlers 2, I have linked demos so you can try them out yourself.
