Hi there,

Time has come to get a new rig. Currently have a Dell Inspiron laptop thats served me well as my main desktop rig for sometime now but the pace of the 1.73 GHz Dothan is showing!

I was going to get a new laptop but Ive come to the conclusion of getting a SFF, keep my Dell laptop for travel etc. Looking at Shuttle's. I loved the A64 version I had back in the day. With the 6800 256MB NU flashed to an Ultra, it was a superb combo :p

After a brief look at the OcUK shop, there are a number of Shuttle flavours to choose from.

Would want something that is compatible with a C2D Yorkfield if possible, HDMI output and quiet as possible.

All the other things, like HD, GPU, RAM etc is pretty much straight forward. Just need to find a decent base to build on.

Thanks :)

mATX is bigger than a Shuttle, but a fair bit more versatile, and you'll find that with a good mATX board you'll get a good overclock too.

Not too keen on the connections etc on the front being on display. Personally like it when they are all hiden away.

Not really looking at overclocking tbh. If I was then I would just get a full dekstop rig with watercooling etc. I did think of the mATX route but thought Shuttle would be better. More compact and probably quieter as standard. No need to buy a motherboard, CPU HSF, PSU and case / chassis.

quieter.. hmm... have you ever seen running Shuttle?:)
I had few of them and always had to do some simple mods, like changing PSU fan.
Shuttles are huge pain in the a** when it comes to silence and cooling. PSU fan goes first, then any other small fans, like 60mm fans on the back of all bigger models...

I have owned a Shuttle before that used to house my A64. It was quiet. I do see your point of changing the fans though to make it quieter.

What mATX cases are decent these days? It may work out cheaper. Was thinking of getting a SX48P2-E which are £380. Could a decent mATX case, quiet case fans, mobo, CPU HSF and PSU be had for £380?

£75 for a V350, £100 on a DFI LP JR P45-T2RS, £100 on an HX620, £30 for a Mini-Ninja.

Plus VAT gives you a bit to spend on case fans as well.

It'll be a bit bigger than a Shuttle but a lot better in terms of cooling and versatility.

Sugo 1,3, Lian Li A05, which can actually take full ATX mobo.

Hm, never knew about the V350. Ive always loved Lian Li's. Build quality is superb. This route will allow me to have 2 optical drives which would be better.

The DFI LP JR P45-T2RS then?

Dont know nothing about the recent Intel chipsets. Cant see the P45 being a bad one though.

I do see your point about not getting one over the top.

DDR2 is way cheaper too :p

Can use either i7 or a normal quad.

Ive been looking closer at the prices and works out a lot cheaper to go down the normal C2D Quad route that i7.

Its just for now. i7 mATX mobos prices will go down in time. Right now we have only DFI mobo for £200. Soon Asus will show up with thier mATX mobo, Rog version.
