So I have a job interview for an agency on thursday, to tied me over for 12 months untill West Mids police sort thenselves out. If I get the job I will be on one shift for the full 12 months, trouble is I don't know which shift would best suit me?! Which would you choose and why? ;-

6.00 - 14.00
14.00 - 22.00
22.00 -6.00

I'm swaying between 6.00-14.00 and the night shift as I can still have some sort of social life.

Josh.

Unless the money is stupid better I would go for the 6-2 shift. Its by far the best one for you social and daily life. You get finished early enough to have the best part of the day to get things done. Depends on the money though as often its a poorly paid shift in some places.

I would go with the 06:00 - 14:00, you would have to get up early, but would get to lie in on days off to make up for it, and you have plenty of day time to do as you wish and see friends.

Having worked shifts for several years, I loath Late/Night Shifts, you never get to see most friends except at weekends, therefore no social life :(

Tide :)

I would agree with what you state. The afternoon into late evening shift ruins that entire 24 hour period.

6-2, late shifts are horrible. I've done a full time job that was 11-8 and that was poxy, the 'lie in' ceases to feel like a late start after about, ooh, a week, and by the time you get home everything's shut and your mates are eating dinner and dug in on the sofa. Worse in summer.

At my last job some of the shifts were lates and mids too, and they were nice on occasion because it feels like a lie in, but if I can help it I will never do mid or late shifts on a permanent basis again because there's no benefit and loads of cons.

Go with the early definitely. You'll get used to dragging your arse out of bed at 4.30, and think about it, in summer when you leave at 2pm you'll have what, six, seven hours of daylight left. Awesome.

i work both 6-2 amd 2-10.
I find if i'm on earlies, I get the rest of the day to do what i like. If i'm on lates I get a better nights kip and can do stuff in the morning. depends on what you prefer really

6am to 2pm

Not a bad shift really, I do 7:30 to 3:30pm out of choice. I can work any 8 hour shift between 7:30 and 6:00pm but choose the earliest so I have a lot of the day left when I get home. Plus traffic is less busy around those hours and will definitely be around 6am and 2pm.

I did a 3-11 shift all over Q4 last year, I was offered a Team Leader job on the condition it was on the late shift. I wanted the job so I did it, I hated it. Sat around all morning waiting for work. If I ever had to get anything done it felt like I was against the clock.

Now I rotate, 7-3, 3-11 every other week, not so bad and I appreciate a lie in one week out of 2.

How much extra do you get, for working Night shift?

not sure how other peoples shift sustems work but the uplifts for those shifts wouuld be as below where I work

6.00 - 14.00 - 20%

14.00 - 22.00 - 33%

22.00 -6.00 - 50%

these are if it was mon-fri, obviously more if it a 7 day rota

if it is similar then the finacual aspect could come into any decision I would think

Our place works off a 7 day rota. I work unsocial nights and days. My shift pay is £7k a year. If you work just unsocial days its half the amount.

ours are just based on standard overtime uplifts, 1.5x outside of 9-5 mon-fri and all day saturday, 2x all day sunday

Well nobody can tell you what shifts suit you. Some people like late hours, others early, the rest of us work our shifts because it's all that's available or it's what suits our commute rush.

I've worked 24hour rotating shifts before and I preferred 11am to 7:30pm at that place of work due to being able to do shopping or whatever in the morning and then having the evenings drive home traffic free - I saved a few quid on petrol at that place of work averaging 39MPG instead of what I get now (27).

Now I'm on a normal 9-5:30 but the distance is halved.
