Looking at getting a slow cooker...primarily because I have just seen this recipe, and it sounds immense! http://www.chow.com/recipes/30356-easy-slow-cooker-pulled-pork

Just bought some Rufus Teague Blazin Hot Barbecue Sauce, and keen to put it to good use.

If anyone has any specific reccomendations for a slow cooker, I'd be glad to hear them along with any decent recipes I could try other than the above!

At the moment this one seems to be winning, and comes with a 2yr guarantee: http://www.johnlewis.com/231245546/Product.aspx . It looks decent value and has solid reviews.

EDIT - http://www.tesco.com/direct/tesco-sc356-slow-cooker-brushed-steel/100-2168.prd This looks like exactly the same model!

I have a 6.5 litre Morphy Richards from the rainforest that cost around £20. Doesn't have timer but don't need one but does the job perfectly.

Some good recipes on here so just do a search but I would try a rub recipe on pork shoulder as well some time as I personally find it much nicer than a shop bought sauce.

Most slow cookers are all the same apart from the size, ive been using slow cookers for years and use them a lot in the winter.

I have the tesco one (i work there :)) and its been great,i do a lot of currys in there but i am looking to do more stuff during the winter.

You will need the largest you want to do full big cuts of meat like pork shoulder.
However haven't you got an oven? Just use that. I got a slow cooker and used it a half dozen times and went back to using the oven.

I've got the Morphy Richards 3.5L one and it suits us (2 people) perfectly. Just prepare it all before you go to work, turn it on "Low" before you go out, return 8 hours later and dinner is ready! Slow cookers are excellent. Uses about the same energy as a lightbulb, or so I am led to believe.

I saw that slow cooker on offer in Tesco the other day but decided not to get it, but I'm thinking I might plump for it now as there's loads of good recipes I can have on the go whilst I'm at work!

Well spotted - been reduced to £12, and I paid £14.97 but only collected it this afternoon, so have emailed them to see what they say

Biggest cheapest one possible I don't think we have ever paid over £15 and never had a problem. That way even if it only lasts one winter it's still value for money and you can just get another.

Don't ever do chili con carne or anything with minced beef in it though because it just turns to mush.

Only way I can imagine this happening is if you didn't brown it first? That's never happened to me, as like Glaucus said, mince is really supposed to simmer for hours in a chilli or spaghetti bolognese.

As everyone has said, get the biggest cheapest one possible, they're much the same.

Just a quick update. I followed the recipe in my OP, and took a few photos along the way. It was so good, I'm probably going to do it again this Friday!

I served it with oven chips & homemade slaw from this recipe: http://www.channel4.com/4food/recipes/chefs/gordon-ramsay/gordon-s-coleslaw-recipe

Tesco also refunded me the difference, so the cooker only cost £12!
