Ok guys I think it is time to upgrade my sound card. I'm currently using a Soundblaster Live 5.1 card and want something with the newer technologies onboard EAX5 etc...

I want to be able to use it with a 5.1 speaker setup and 5.1 headphones so 7.1 support isn't needed at the moment but might be a future upgrade at some point. So far I've been looking at the Soundblaster X-Fi range but don't know which is the best bang for buck so to speak.

The card is going to be maily used for gaming, FPS, Racing Sims, some movie viewing and also a little vocal recording as well so low latency ASIO support is essential, out of the X-Fi range or any other cards, which would you guys recommend, I'm set to spend up to about £120 on a card maybe more thanks.

If you're mainly playing games get the X-Fi Xtreme Music and you'll have about £40 left over for other goodies :)

I went from a SB Live to an X-Fi XtremeMusic and it was a great upgrade. MP3's sound great, movies are superb with the 3D Positioning on headphones and gaming is fantastic - I was skeptical, but I can hear things in Doom3/Quake4 that I couldn't before and it's also so immersive with the EAX/surround effects. So that would be my suggestion. The better X-Fi's give you the extra RAM (which is bordering on a gimmick, IMO) and a breakout box, which might be useful.

Well because of some recording I do from time to time I've decided to go for the Fatal1ty, this will allow me to plug an electric guitar straight into the drive bay, also with the added benefit of the X-Ram for large sound samples which will come in useful when working in audio software, and also I think onboard RAM is something that games will require in the near future for sound not just graphics. :D
