Which sound device?

I have installed a new OS and with it all the drivers. I have on-board sound provided by my Abit IP35 on-board sound and a Creative Audigy 4.

My question is: is it possible that the onboard sound is better than my dedicated sound card?

I cannot work out exactly what chip the on-board sound is, I cannot really tell the difference in sound quality.

Further, is it work installing all the creative guff, like "alchemy" that it asks you to install as critical (not talking about sound mixing apps they install), or just stick with the drivers only?

Any help very much appreciated.

The onboard is Realtek ALC888, but don't ask me about the sound quality, i'm not a audophile. For me the onboard sound card is same as X-Fi or Xonar DX/XD (yes, i used all of them).
