Which space game for me?

I see there are now loads of 1st and 3rd person fly-y trade-y shoot-y explore-y space games becoming available and I'm wondering which one is likely a best fit for me!

So here's a bit about me!

I love masseffect for the story and universe.
I love the idea of x3 and own Reunion but to me it is an unpenatrable mass of GUI and keyboard shortcuts. But it looks very good once you break the wall down.
I like Galaxy on Fire 2 on Android because of its upgradey ship / RPG elements, and shooting, but this is a bit simple.
I'd like the option to become a shooty mercenary or a law abiding trader.
I don't want to play eve
First or Third person flying is a must.

Are any of the new spacey games like this?

Freelancer?

Elite Dangerous is brilliant, but there isn't a story as such, and while the devs are talking about an eventual first person mode where you leave the ship, this will be a later paid expansion, and probably still won't have a story.

Like the man said, Elite Dangerous: Having a working simulation of the real Milky Way is unique as game setting, and the space combat is very well done.

But only if you can cope with sandbox not story-focused gameplay, and the fact that it's still beta with some features yet to come.

I'd say Freelancer still holds up today. (Runs fine on 8.1 64bit and its over 10 years old now)
Its all space based, planet and station parts are just for trading, equipping etc...
Cutscenes provide the story which I quite like.

I have:
Evochron Mercenary
GoF2
Starpoint Gemini 2

Freelancer is still better IMO, but maybe I just can't get into the others.

Freelancer was a great game, as for the current space sims i'd get both elite and star citizen, they are so far apart in their development progress you can basically get both.

Yeah, there are quite a few space games I've tried over the years;
Freelancer
Nexus
X2
X3
Space Rangers
Privateer 1&2
TIE Fighter

I'm sure there are more that I can't remember just yet.
All just in the hope that they might be the next Elite. And for me they weren't. Yes, they mostly had some good points, but weren't the sum of the whole that Frontier was for me. But Frontier Developments have/are bringing Elite Dangerous, and so far I'm loving it. And this quote from the latest newsletter tells you it's scale
"Beta 3’s 2,406 star systems mean it is huge, about five times bigger than Beta 2. Yet it represents only a little over half a millionth of one per cent of the full game to be launched later this year!"

Freelancer gets my vote too, but highly recommend spending a while reading up on all the mods (from higher res texture packs through to extra player created missions and more)

Similar is the Freespace2 (And Openspace a modded community version)

Is freelancer the one that only recently found its way to steam? Maybe I'll give that a try.

Which of Elite and Star Citizen meets my criteria the best, at their current respective stages of development?

Elite you can play now.

SC you cannot play now, beyond very basic dogfighting/racing. It will be at least 18 months to 2 years before most of the gameplay features are realised.

I didn't know Freelancer was on steam? I have been waiting for a long time, but thought it still required the CD?

Elite dangerous is worth getting IMO. I've pre ordered to get the beta and I'm really enjoying it. It's very much an open ended game so don't expect much of a pre-determind storyline. It's basically the day z of space sims but if that's what you're after it's fantastic. Full game should be out by the end of the year.

Star citizen looks good too but it'll be a long time before you can play it so don't hold your breath.

Other than elite dangerous I don't think there's much else on the horizon though?

A caution about Elite: Dangerous though, if you don't like atmospheric flight in space, you may not like it. I can't stand the flight model unfortunately, I was hoping for Elite II controls... Hopefully it will grow on me!

Apart from that Elite: Dangerous is your best bet... Soon to be released (and will be added to).

Long terms, if Star Citizen completes as expected, that should be the pinnacle of a 'space game', in my opinion.

Starsector? It's in Alpha and development is slow but it's an outstanding concept with some great mods.

Doesn't really meet the requirements but.

Hello almoststew1990
have you heard of a game called : I-war 2 : Edge of chaos
??
Newtonian Physics open world, it does have a sorry, the ships (only 4 usable with a 5th on remote). the game also has some interesting puzzels you'll need to work out and doesn't just rely on shoot everything (just most things). you'll get better on with I-war2 i think, it is suggested playing witha joystick with a Hat switch its more usfull as its acting as a menu instead of view option.

I-war was from memory one of the first games to come out with Newtonian Physics which started the trend to add it to some of the other games released
