i jusr gave my altec lansing ada 995 thx speakers to the mrs thinking i wouldnt miss them , but after 10 mins of messin with my music software i realise i need decent sound back her old speakers i swapped with her are crap

i defo want 5.1 and a thx rating with nice shaped sats , the sub goes under my desk so thats no prob hidding

my sound card is a creative digital live

what speakers should i be looking at guys ?

£100 monitor stereo hifi speakers
£100 hi-fi amplifer

That'll sound better than a PC 5.1 system. I'm upgrading from FPS 2000 to a NAD 320 & B&W 601 system. Didn't really think much of those (typical satellite/midwoofer lack of midrange) THX is not needed, and IMO only good budget gear with THX is Rotel RB-991/RB-993 and M&K S-85 speakers. Lucas sold out THX to the PC market so really THX Select is slapped onto anything to sell.

PC speakers generally go boom boom tisch tisch, but lack the ability to reproduce the more refined sound more akin to a good hi-fi. When you're spending £200 upwards, you really don't want to buy a second-class system by going for a PC centric 5.1 satellite and sub setup.

appreciate your replys guys , but i`m a bit surprised realy , going back to my ada 995`s , have you ever heard them ?? they are fantastic and waisted on my Mrs setup running ac97 from the board ...but she`s happy , but when i had them running of my creative dig SB live they where responsive and full and never lagged for a second which some cheapo stuff will do , i never ever noticed a range defecet and i rekon ( like most ) that i have a good ear for music , the THX rating is as you say over hyped in the Pc world BUT with the ADA995`s the Bass was well controlled and in abundance if needed , i was hopping another different set of THX rated speakers would be the same ??

i have a NAD setup in my lounge for cd work and a Yam DTS amp feeding a collection of mission floor standers and RCF sats for surround with a Morduant Short 309 adding the good stuff when needed all passed by silver jubilee and coax so i do know what half decent DTS sounds like

and i stil say the ada995`s were equal to my lounge setup ...i think tbh it had more to do with room size and shape than overall sound quality though , my PC room being nice and square and my lounge being 30 ft long

so back to the speaker acquisition in question if you guys say that the modern THX PC speakers are not a lot of good i`l avoid em and try to find something different :)

but i am surprised the modern THX setups fall short of decent

THX is basically meaningless these days, companies simply buy the badge to put on their kit.

Unless looking intro true THX high end gear, ie M&K S-150 and Bryston poweramps. That doesn't mean non THX quality gear is inferior though.

but it does insure a decent level of Bass rather than a struggling out of breath sub ...or does it ?? hahaha we could go on all day as you guys know , the sound conversation is akin to the big bang theory :) many hours of prostagination with litttle result hahahahah...is prosagination a real word or did i just make that up ?? :)

Proper THX ensures those components pass THX's own testing methods, AFAIK certain dB, % of THD, speakers/amplifier testing, processing Re-EQ, timbre matching, bass management in a certain room size etc. But THX for computers really not worth it.

btw the only THX piece I have is processor which is THX Ultra. I don't use it in full THX mode but I do use some of the THX features.

THX classification is pre-power, poweramps and speakers/subwoofer. THX doesn't gurantee "a certain level of bass" unless you mean dB output around 30hz. However you can probably say a THX Ultra subwoofer will be far better than a 5" 50W non THX jobbie. But a non THX Contrabass will be better than a budget THX subwoofer. You can also buy a subwoofer that will play louder and louder than a THX Ultra subwoofer yet still not be THX. Some of the big M&K's struggle with <25hz material wheras mine doesn't (not THX)
