Hi,

Many years ago I used to love playing stratgy games. They inc starcraft, command and conquer, sim city v1, train tycoon etc

Due to work and family commitments I decided to stop playing games (was very hard) as I felt I was verging on being addicted and spending 4hrs+ a day. I decided I needed to focus on work\family and really put my energies into that. I am now very settled in work and home and finding I have more spare time. This has made me think I want to buy another stratagy game. So my question to you all is what game should I go for from the last 1-2 years. I have a fast PC, no high end 3D card, but I don't want lots of heavy 3D graphics anyway. I want something challenging and enjoyable... Its been a very long time (7 years+) so any help would be appreciated! :)

Cheers

Hi mate, I don't know if this interests you, but I find the Combat Mission series of games amazing. I play two of the series, (CMBB & CMAK) and the earliest is 7-8 years old now so it is showing its age but they are very good from the point of view of accuracy and strategy. They are based on WWII events, from either the Russian front or the Western med theatres of operation. You can get lost in these games.

They aren't heavy on the graphics as they use standard bitmaps and wavs, but they do require some processing power, but with modifications you can make the games look pretty.

Take a look here for more information on the Afrika Korps game :- http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=45&Itemid=84

This is CMBB - http://www.battlefront.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=55&Itemid=95

There is also a new game being released soon that is a "bolt-on" for CMBB - which will allow you to play entire campaigns based on accurate and historical data - so if you like the idea of replaying Stalingrad as accurately as you can on a computer, this might suit :)

If you prefer newer games, I also love the Total War series of games. Particularly Rome and Medieval II, with user modifications of course, but these are heavy on graphics and cpu!

CM games are awesome :) have you tried CM: shockforce? their latest, modern day game.

Avoid the recent C&C's (anything after RA2) as they are shockingly bad.

C&C 3 isn't that bad.. Generals was the pants one imo, but avoid none the less.

RA3 is on it's way, can't wait for that..

Sins of a Solar Empire is epic.

They are awesome but a lot of people now can't see past the dated graphics engine which is a shame because there is nothing like it.

I have tried Shockforce but I just can't get on with it - I have tried the demo several times and I just don't like it. I think it's a combination of the modern day forces and the fact it's on a much smaller scale - plus I don't find the controls as intuitive as they once were. I was an early adopter of the very first release demo and that was a complete ball bag - it was bugged to hell and back and that really sealed the deal.

yeh I've been playing it since release too, they've really nailed it down now with the latest patch and marines module though :)

A new Normandy game is only about a year/year and a half out!

Another vote for Combat Mission, its an awesome game where you can employ real life military tactics. Bit of a steep learning curve with regards to which unit can do what but once you crack playing the AI you can then move onto playing by email against another human which is what the games all about.

philstanbridge, did you ever get the game running on Vista ? I remember you posting on Battlefront about your problems.

Ah right, small world :D

Yes mate, up and running on Vista. I've had to fudge it a little but it's running with my 4850 with full fog and nice framerates.

The experience you and others had with the game and Vista put me off getting it.

I used to pass by Battlefront occasionally and remembered your name from here !

Do you belong to any of the gaming clubs ?

Space Empires IV Deluxe. It's 2D so will work on pretty much anything built in the last decade.

There's also Sins Of A Solar Empire. It's not that shiny on the graphics side, but I don't know if it would strain your computer or not.

Yeah it is a shame that they don't fully support it anymore - but it is a Nvidia/ATI problem rather than Battlefront's. Either way its all good now - it runs a treat once again.

I'm looking forward to Combat Mission Campaigns - that will be interesting. Also just read up on Shock Force Marines and the new patch and it does sound like they've made ground! Maybe I need to try it again. Pity the demo is only 1.7.

Clubs? Can't say that I do.

Ahh so theres progress with CMC ? I'd written that off !

Cant get into CMSF, I'm sort of stuck in a world war two dimension, only games I play seriously are il2, MOH and CM.

Reason I asked about the war gaming clubs is because they have ongoing campaigns like Band of Brothers, the entire North Africa campaign, St Lo and several CMBB. I was briefly involved with the Onion Wars and the Lauban Campaign and they were absolutely awesome.
I been thinking about joining one recently but my gaming times limited.

I see! Time is the only problem. These things are known to swollow it up in spades. I used to play a colleague head to head in CMBB and CMAK and had some good battles - it is much better versus another human opponent obviously like you state. But you can't beat a quick fix with a 300 pointer small battle. I am pretty sad and would go through month to month from 41 to 45 until the war ends as one side, and play 300-500 small battles and skirmishes using the equipment available at the time. It would take some time to do but it was fun. This is what I miss about Shock Force - you just don't have that epic feel to the game.

I believe Campaigns is still set for 2008 release so that will be interesting.

If you are interested in the campaign side of things then there are some superb series of battles downloadable from CMMODS. I've played the France 1940 and early Barbarossa ones and they certainly add something.

I've strayed towards the larger battles over the years, are you familiar with Epsom, Clervaux or Blut und Ehre ? They all huge fights on superb maps, as accurate as the game allows. If CMC delivers what was promised then I will set a pc up just for that and probably not play anything else.
