Which Sub £500 card?

I guess I have been too focused on it being a 4 year old and 2 generation old card. Having compared results in reviews the GTX 980 is still packing enough punch for what i need from it. Ill keep the money for next time.

Wise choice! Is it overclocked? Get it to 1450/1500mhz and it'll still crush 1080p

Well I used 1080p with RTX 2080 and 8700K, it is not a massive overkill and never been bottlenecked at 1080p if you read reviews benchmarks.

Yes your current card for 1080p is overkill. So spending £500 on an upgrade would be stupid.

As for future proofing. It's a terrible idea to do with the cost of GPU's atm. Also 4K is overrated. 1440p is what I game at at 144hz it's a good middle ground which requires less GPU power.

Basically 4K gaming on a PC is an extreme luxury. One which isn't necessary and won't be for a long time.

Was just about to say hang onto the 980 for what it’s worth the one I had handled 3440x1440 pretty nicely, 60fps vsync without too much bother.

Great cards for overclocking. Especially with some bios modding

The 980 isn't really any good anymore for 1440p, in my case it ran out of memory whilst playing a few games (BFV and PUBG) and it had some huge framerate drops. For 1080p though it should be enough, at least until Navi and 7nm nvidia cards arrive.

Hi all

I am planning on upgrading my PC as it is getting a touch old and I am a touch bored atm. I currently have a GTX 980 and aiming for a mid range rig with the new Metro and Doom in mind.

I have managed to sort out most of the specs but I am still not 100% on which GPU. I am looking at an MSI RTX 2070 Armor at £489 which as a bonus comes with a free copy of Metro.

Is this a good option or can sombody come up with an alternative?


The rest of my planned specs are:
CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
MoBo - MSI X470 Plus
RAM - 2 x 8Gb Corsair DDR4 3200
SSD - Samsung M.2 970 Pro

Vega 56 or 64. You won't regret it even if you go to 3440x1440 with any of them, for 4K you need to put the hand deep in the pocket if you do not want to use console.

Good plan. My son just built a rig with a Ryzen 2600X with the Wraith Max RGB cooler, Msi Tomahawk B450, Corsair Pro RGB 16GB and a Msi RTX 2060 Gaming Z.

Looks absolutely fantastic and the Ryzen 2600X boosts to 4.25 Ghz in light applications. In games in never drops below 4 Ghz and is usually at 4.1 Ghz.

And this is straight out of the box without manual overclocking.

I did encourage him to get a Vega 56 which would have been my choice for under £300. Paying £500+ for 1080p is crazy.
