Well dad has scrapped the idea of an estate which imo is a good decision.

Which saloon is the best?
Requirements - has to be as big as possible :D
not more than 30k
Diesel

I have considered
A8
Phaeton
7 Series
Any other ideas? I would say S class BUT its far too indian.

The phaeton apparently is a very good car, any comments?

The Mercedes Benz S Class could be argued to be one of the finest cars in the world.

Stuff the image. Buy an S Class. Beautiful.

The S320 CDI is a fantastic car in every single way.

If the image really is too much for you, the discreet nature of the current model Audi A8 might appeal. As will the epic 4.0 V8 TDI engine - but I'm not sure whether these have dipped under £30k yet.

Pheaton is nice but.... I wouldn't chose it over the A8 or the Merc.

We test drove a Pheaton, I did a little writeup about it but it's been pruned - it's better than you'd ever expect for a VW, it's a really lovely car.. but it lacks the sense of occasion you'd probably want from a car of this type.

the 4.0 TDI are hovering just above 30k which is OK as main dealers are expected to shift a little on the price.

The image of the merc is just annoying as I would agree that its a nice car, although a new one has just been released, should I expect the prices of the current model to take a small hit?

Not in recent years it isn't :(

Put aside your belief that anything newer than 10 years old sucks for a second.

The 99-05 S Class is a staggeringly lovely car in every sense. I'd agree with you that current Mercs are not built how they used to be - but the S Class is an exception to this rule.

Were we discussing E's, I would agree with you.

the S class would probably have a few more toys right? (forefront of technology and all that)

Thing is that the current S class is quite old, so I am not too sure about all the toys, the A8, Phaeton and the 7 series are all 1 generation ahead, right?

That wouldn't be hard as it is not a belief I hold. Merely one you like to think I do.

It is a lovely car but the knock-on effect of the, to be blunt, DISMAL E's and C's of late has impacted the S class both in service, build and quality.

It is a great car but certainly not as great as it was or as great as it could be.

The guy who co-drives for my dad runs a Merc dealership...He very nearly sold up a few years back because he had no faith in the product whatsoever. :(

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

It's all due to the way Merc changed direction in terms of car design.

Mercs of old:

Design a car. Then, price it.

Mercs from mid 90's on...

Price a car, then design it :(

I was always under the impression that the S Class escaped this.

They half-did. You know the cheap, tuppaware-style plastic used in SLKs, E's and so on? They didn't use that...But they still designed to a price and build quality did suffer.

Lexus is220d.

My dad has just got the SE-L version and abolutly loves it to bits, i know my place in the passenget seat though . The amazing thing is it has none of the tractor noises that you associate with a diesel, it is soooo quiet on the inside and outside!.

Plus never needing to get the key out of your pocket to unlock, drive or lock it is super cool.

Yeah, but an I series Lexus really can't compare to the likes of a S/7 series as its the equivalent model to a 3 series/C class.

Tbh i'd probably go for the S class.

Not in a million years. Doesn't come close.

If it did, Lexus wouldn't need to sell the LS430 or the GS ;)

*cries*, runs off to tell daddy

Fair point, but they only do the IS in a diesel.
