Which surround sound system - HELP please!!!

Update

The other website faffed and faffed with stock, before the product vanished completely! I've ended up ordering (2 seconds ago lol), the Onkyo HT-S5305B - which I believe is very similar, but does not have a passive sub woofer.

Thanks for the advice - I'll let you know how it sounds :)

It's the model up from the 3305, and at cracking price atm from the Jungle River website :)

N00b question

Alx, how do they differ from each other ? Is it worth getting the S5305B over the HTS-3305B

Whats the diffrences

The 3305 has a passive sub, whereas the 5305 has an active sub (prob won't notice a huge amount of difference, but having an active sub makes it much easier to upgrade at the later stage). I also think the 5305 has a slightly better amp but may need to double check that on the Onkyo website.

Thanks dude think i will order from the rainforest today :)

Out of intrest ... will it hook straight up to my xbox 360 and my 50' LG plasma ?

Cheers

Yeah, you plug hdmi from xbox into the amp of the system (or whatever connection you use), then there is an hdmi out that goes from the amp to the TV. I've got a ps3, so not sure of the settings you need to get 5.1 sound etc, may be a good idea to check out avforums or google "xbox 5.1 amp settings" or something similar.

Mine should be arriving anyday now :). Sort of shame I'll be in Aberdeen all weekend hehe

Hi Mate

My Xbox is pre HDMI, :(

so i plug in via HD composite

Do you get speaker cables with the package or do i need to purchase seperatley ... also are you thinking of wall mounting the speakers ? if so what brackets

Thanks

You'll need an optical cable from the 360 to the receiver, and also the optical break-out adapter for the 360 itself to get an optical out in the first place.

Out of interest why do you need an optical cable, can't you just use the HDMI (assuming you have HDMI on the xbox)?

So how does it sound? Have you noticed any issues with the sub clicking on & off?

Very tempted to get one myself but somewhat cautious now after reading a thread about it on avforums.com

Literally setting it up now mate. I'll report back once sorted lol.

The sound is awesome! I can crank it right up and it's LOUD, but doesn't distort. I haven't noticed any clicking on and off sounds or any faults. Bear in mind that I've only used it for an hour or so and haven't tweaked or fiddled anything.

Also it is all connected via HDMI cables at the moment. I have ordered an optical cable for the Sky+, which I thought would have been here by now.

What are the benefits of an optical cable with Sky+, I only use the HDMI cable. Having said that, Sky in our house is mainly children's TV until I get the movie channels over Christmas.

Quite agree though, the Onkyo produces an amazing (and loud) sound.

*edit, I have the Sky HD box so I guess the Sky+ might not have an HDMI connection *

Benefits of optical for Sky+HD are that you will get 5.1 surround sound for channel/programs that have it.

For some stupid reason Sky used outdated hardware so it can't do it over HDMI.

Set up my S5305 the other day, sounds pretty damn good :D

Just been playing a bit of BF:BC2 which was awesome :)
