I have a tight budget of £175 (Can stretch slightly) .

What should I go for....?


Higher than 15" and lower than 23" :D

A couple of 19" screens to look at - widescreen option - Acer AL1916W, regular option - Neovo F-419. The Neovo in particular has a lot of advocates on here. A touch more pricey but the Samsung SM913N is also very popular.
 
Acer AL1916W - What resolution? Also as its widescreen do I get a slightly "Didgy" screen in Counterstrike Source and similar games.
 
Pretty sure CS:S supports widescreen, as do many new games. I'm not encouraging you to go widescreen though, that's a decision for you. I just mentioned it because it fits your budget and I thought it might be an option you hadn't looked at. Check out the OcUK 19" monitor page for the specs on those btw.
 
I'm thinking about getting the Acer widescreen monitor and found this site which shows screens of games in widescreen and normal mode.
From these screens widescreen looks quite good for games as you can get a wider view of the game.

Put the mouse over this image to see it in widescreen and move it away to see it on a normal screen.
