Which The Sims ?

Hi my kid, (who's a bit of minecraft nut) is now asking me to get him a The Sims game on his PC. After playing a free ver on his iPad.

Not knowing anything about the game, and there being a whole bunch of them, i thought I'd ask on here.. Which version should i be buying ? The latest which i think is 3 ?

He's 9 but old enough to play most games.
 
The Sims 4 is released on the 5th September :), so personally, I would wait until them and explain that you will get your son the new game.

Failing that, hopefully The Sims 3 will come down in price (including all the expansion packs).

Also, bare in mind that The Sims 2, is currently having a ~deal~ on Origin, if you register a copy of The Sims 2, it will (should, although I've not personally done this with a newly registered game) be upgraded to include all the additional content and expansion packs. So those other options offer good value for money in terms of content.

Depending on the spec of his PC mind, they can be pretty power hungry games especially with the additional expansions, dlc etc.

Another option is that you can get Sims 3 on last gen consoles.

I played Sims 3 maxed out in 1600x900 with a 2.5GHz Turion II Dual core and an HD4530M. It is unlikely there will be an issue. :p
 
Honestly I'd go with the Sims 2 if you can find it. It's a pretty stable complete package where Sims 3 turns into a mess with more than a couple of add ons installed without significant modding.

If you can't find Sims 2 I think I've got a Sims 3 key from that Origin humble bundle a while back you can have.
