Hey there

Well I am planning on upgrading to a PCI-Express X16 graphics card and the two that are within my price range are the GeForce 8600GTS and the ATi HD3850. I was wondering which one is better in terms of gaming, playing all of the most recent and upcoming games on the highest settings possible with the best framerate possible. I am talking about stuff like CoD4, UT3, Crysis, BF2142, Oblivion, Stalker, Bioshock and some upcoming games like Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, Spore etc.

The computer I will have (I am upgrading it for gaming) will be an Athlon X2 3800+ (2.0GHz x2 so 4.0GHz, 1MB Cache) and 2GB DDR (not DDR2) Ram. I tend to hate playing PC games when they look crappy as it annoys me knowing that they should look better so I want the card that will make them look as good as possible along with the components I have.

Thanks for your help and time.

Yeah, Crysis isn't really the main game I intend playing but I thought if I'm getting a new setup it should be able to run the game at least and I can play through it. What settings will I be getting with CoD4, BF2142, Oblivion, UT3, and Stalker with that card though?

Yeah at that res, you'll get away with medium and a few stuff set to high. On pretty much everything else apart from Crysis (cod 4 etc) you can expect to sail by on high to maxed out settings comfortably.

The HD3850 is a great little card for the money.
