which to choose: Anthem or Battlefield V?

I used to be a gamer when I was younger, but then I haven't really played much of anything for the last 10 years or so -- but I'm currently eyeballing a new RTX card for HTPC use and they come with a choice of a free download between Anthem and Battlefield V, but I don't know anything about either of them.

I like 2 things primarily in games - engaging gameplay that is challenging and difficult, but skill-based so feels rewarding to master, or engaging storytelling. Which one would be better for me?

I love the idea of PvE if it was like a long engaging co-op story campaign. But my scepticism of games these days (probably ignorance I admit) makes me worried that the gameplay will be tailored so that every player can face-tank their way through every part of the content as long as they have the right gear - and the 'gameplay' is doing repetitive things in order to get said loot to facetank through the content, or buying lootboxes to get the gear quicker.

Whether it's movies and "cinematic universes" or games I generally feel that things that are designed not to end, means they are designed to be purposefully unfulfilling and keep you on the hook.

But if the gameplay had some fun combat mechanics then at least Anthem could be fun for a while.

But what's wrong with Battlefield V? I've only ever played one Battlefield game which was Battlefield 2142 but it wasn't too bad.

Not sure about anthem but I would not say that bf v has many of those attributes. It's difficult alright but that's probably due to all the hacks. From my experience if you like challenge and reward get dark souls 3. If you like a story then get the witcher 3 both are cheap at the minute in lunar sale

Did I miss the sale? Witcher 3 is £25 and Dark Souls 3 is £40 on Steam. Seems pretty expensive for a 4 year old and 3 year old game, or is that standard?

Likewise. I'm a BF player thru and thru, feels like I've been playing them for 25 years, thousands and thousands of hours. But each year with each release the game goes from bad to worse, each time moving further away from what I call a BF game. It's just a casual kiddie shooter now made by a team that's completely lost sight of what made BF the genre leader for all those early years.

Amazes me how they can't figure out what the winning formula was back in the glory days, it's so flipping simple.

Can you elaborate on this a bit more? Casual kiddie shooter in which sense, and what is different about BF:V's gameplay, that has been lost from previous ones?

Having spent a whole day looking into it, Anthem has actually grown on me a lot and I think i'm going to go for that. Don't know if I'd pay full for price for it mind, not without seeing how it did at launch, but since it's free I think it looks pretty fun.

Apex looks great too - I'm definitely going to try it. Looks right up my alley.
