Hello,

Trying to finalize a build here, and wondering if there is anything better for around £375 (already bought the ram, cost me £33.98).

XFX ATI Radeon HD 6870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE AVP, Stalker, CODMW2 Games & 3D Mark 2011
(£145.82) £174.98

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail
(£91.66) £109.99

Foxconn A7DA-S 3.0 AMD 790GX (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard
(£45.82) £54.98

Total: £339.96

Now, the free games are tempting, as can sell them on and get some money back - or use to buy a better psu/case/or w/e (which would be nice as I'm a tight git :D)

Would be powered by a 460W CM PSU (think it's rated to 430W or something similar).

Gaming and video/photo-editing are main uses, predominately gaming and schoolwork xD

Currently have a 1440x900 19" monitor, that will probs be upgraded october time to a 22"er.

Thanks for your time, again! :p

Personally I'd suggest either saving money and getting the 5850, or spending slightly more to get the 5870. The power consumption wouldn't be too different in either case (as shown above) and the saving (5850) or performance increase (5870) would be worth it IMO.

edit: actually after having another look at the performance numbers the 6870 does slightly better than I thought.

Yeah, looking at benchmarks on anandtech its only 3-4fps between them, and I'm sure most other sites tell the same story.

So HD6870 still the best way to go?

Its a shame you cant stretch to a 6950 and try unlocking it to a 6970 but yes given budget the above looks great, really good value mobo, solid cpu (still) and nice gfx card

It is indeed a shame, would love to do that, but it's just not economically viable and wouldn't be for nearly 2 months!

Better click buy on the gpu then, before the offer runs out.

Cheers guys!

If you can fit it in, maybe look at a 560ti?

Not quite as good for the free games, but so far looking at some reviews it seems to be performing quite a bit better... But haven't actually managed to look at fps differences yet, so not too sure. But might be worth looking into :)

Edit: Just noticed your post in graphics cards, seems you're one step ahead of me on this thought xD

Yep :p

HD6870 ~ HD5870 ~ GTX560Ti (~ representing approximately equal, so small fps differences)

And drivers for the HD6XXX series are still in baby phase so never know :p

95thrifles, that would be a drawback, but if I decide to downsize for uni (smaller case so not having massive tower xD) it might be worth looking at.
