Gonna be doing a 3k PC build soon so looking towards top end of GPU's to put in. Whatever card I get will be going under water.

Have generally been an AMD person for a fair while and am not shy of crossfire on a single card (previously owning a 4870x2, 5970) and lastly a 7970 Lightning. Can't say I noticed any particular issues with micro stuttering even back then.

Was originally set on a 290X but after seeing prices of the 7990 it seems a bit mad to consider it considering the similar price points vs the performance achieved, benchmarks show it consistently thrashing it!

Any opinions into buying "older" tech at this stage? Will be buying in the next week or so and not looking to go over £500 for a card

EDIT: Will be for 1440p

290's cf'd would be ideal although over your budget. In your budget and for 1440p the 7990 is probably the best choice, shame your missed the deal the other day but yer I dont think you will be getting more performance than the 7990. Also as suggested in other topics of similar nature, make sure the games you want to play are CF friendly!

Understand about crossfire support which is why I wanted to highlight dealt with crossfire before, personally I don't think there are many issues with it nowadays and be same waiting for NV to update for SLI as well.

Does seem the best option. There is the option of going 290/290x first then dropping a second in but have said I would do that before and never did + the cost of an extra waterblock and drain/refill/bleed

If not really budget minded their is a huge amount of performance to be had with the 780ti and could be a viable alternatibe to the 7990
That being said the 7990 is faster overall and will feature mantle suport. Only advantage the 290 has is trueaudio and memory. If you added s second 290 at a letter date then you would out perform the 7990

780ti offers best performance for a single GPU

Otherwise 7990, most games it'll be the fastest but then there is the odd game that'll not support SLI/Crossfire

A 3k build with a £500 budget for a GPU doesn't add up to me. You may be forcing yourself to spend over the odds on the other parts just to get to 3k. I would rather go overkill with two 290 (non X) if I was gonna spend that much on a system than 2.5k on goodness knows what other overpriced components.

290s would best a 7990 and 780 Ti (in games that scale).

For a little more you could get two HIS R9 290's that have already been flashed by OCUK to a R9 290x that would mean 290x CF that will eat everything you throw at it and would keep you going for a long time and save you a little bit of money then getting the standard 290x CF. Just an idea :)

Thanks everyone.

Think I will revise my spec a bit and go for crossfire 290 / 290x rather than keep the single card, interesting that OCUK have the flashed 290's for sale, will look into them as well!
