If your friend is really considering going to 4k in the future, then he might want to have a look at 780 6GB versions as well as AMD 290X 8GB one. Since I do not believe that either 3 or 4GB of VRAM will be able to properly max out games at 4k and in order to play properly, you will most likely rarely be able to put AA/AF if any as well possible struggle at just ultra textures with them.

hmmmm perhaps he should look at the sapphire 8gb r9 290 one as well then ! there aint much difference in price i see in the 780ti and the sapphire 8gb one either ?

They are roughly equal with give or take a few frames either side of differing games. The 780Ti is the fastest but the limiting factor is the 3GB of VRAM for 4K. Sure if he was staying 1080P for a while and wanting the fastest single core card out, that would be a good card. The 290X is a fair chunk cheaper though and again, it is fractionally behind and ahead in some games. The 8GB 290X is very pricey and he would need a couple of them for 4K gaming (if he wanted high settings) or if he would be happy to turn settings down, the 290X/290 in CF (more so the 290 for price reasons) would be a good shout or the best price per performance card at 4K is the 6GB 780.

ye he could go for 8Go vaporx, but it's a limited edition, if he wants to crossfire later, he might not find another one to crossfire.
even better R9 290 VaporX is for 350£,is really enough for 1080p, and thats about 100£ less than the 290X, and 200£ less than 780Ti.
so for 100£ more he can go crossfire from the start, be 4k ready, and have almost double the performance of 780ti
