Which type of paint roller?

Tomorrow i'm going to start painting our recently skilled walls and ceilings given that the plaster has been allowed to dry for a few weeks.

I've done lots of reading and I think i'm going to use Dulux Supermatt diluted with about 30%-50% water and apply using a roller.

Thing is, there doesn't seem to be much guidance on roller types.

Sponge/Foam?
Fine wool
Medium wool
Long wool
Something else?

What are the different types of rollers for?

For interior walls that are smooth you need to use foam else you'll apply too much paint.

the fluffy wool types are for use on varying degrees of 'bumpy' walls - for example brick, artex or stucco.

e.g. http://www.elrey.com/textures-cement-finish-textures.shtml

The walls on that page are an extreme example of where longer 'lambs wool' type rollers would be useful.

make sure your new walls are paint ready and have been sanded if required.

Personally I would not touch the Dulux paint unless you get it extremely cheap, goto screwfix and get some Leyland trade White for £15 to use with a 50/50 mix of water on fresh plaster, two coats to seal the walls and ceiling.

As for rollers I have always used a short hair fine wool.

Never got on with a foam roller and can't stand the finish, for fresh smooth plaster I'd use a short strand roller. I'm a big fan of Dulux trade super mat I used it for the top two floors of our house bare plaster and ceilings it's the nicest paint I've used and I found it much better than both crown and Johnsons that I've used in the past. The finish is great the builder even commented on it when he came back to finish a couple of bits.

Brother and father are both decorators and swear by Purdy products. They made me buy one when decorating my house and to be honest it absolutely turded on anything I'd already bought from B&Q/Wickes, cost 2-3 times more but as usual you get what you pay for.

Pretty sure it was a wool one, medium length, coverage blew the others out of the water. Couple it with a sturdy pole and always either clean the roller off or wrap it up properly after each use and you'll be set for many years!

This I will definitely agree with 10 years ago I decorated our downstairs with cheap 'disposable rollers' as I was to lazy to clean them and while the finish is ok it is nothing like as nice as the stuff I've done recently with a quality roller. I got two rollers and use one for white and one for colours and wash them properly after each use!

Short pile roller. I'd then personally brush over it as I don't like orange peel.

I'd rather have "orange peel" than brush marks all over the wall!!

I used a few cheapo short pile Harris rollers when doing our living room recently, and it turned out absolutely fine :)

Soft wide brush, after the paint has gone off a little. You don;t get any peel, and certainly no brush marks.

Not for everyone, but I do it and my walls are flawless. Take it or leave it :).
