Which type of speaker system to get?

I have a problem.

When I get my Mac Pro, I obviously need a speaker system. This is also going to be used for my Xbox 360, 42" Lcd(Sky in the future) aswell as the mac pro.

I want to have superb quality, and the main use will be music coming from the mac.

The problem I have is which speakers to get. I am a complete novice at all this, so I don't no much. But which should I get? a 5.1 setup , with a amplfier. Or a Amplifier with speakers like this for e.g. Bookshelf speakers, Centre speakers and so on.

Which is the best for me, and which is the best for my money. My Budget will be around £250. Not much I know, but this can be increased, it just means more spending ! and saving ;)

For your budget I'd get a decent second hand stereo amp and a couple of decent second hand bookshelf speakers.

Maybe £100 on the amp and £150 on the speakers. If you are mainly using it for musinc then that's how it's going to sound best. You can always upgrade later as your needs change.

Your options are fairly wide so your best off picking some things form the bay that you like the look of and offering them up here for people to comment on.

You might want to start by looking at amps by:

Cambridge Audio
NAD
Rotel
Arcam

As for Speakers, the world is your oyster. Start with:

Mission
Wharfdale
Mordunt-Short
Tannoy
B&W
Keff

No doubt others will be along with more advice, but this should do you to start with.

Loud enough mate, those little tannoys punch well above thier weight, the quality is also superb and the cambridge can drive them well.

How big is the room your gonna have them in?

Also, if music is the main use, 2 speakers is best, forcing music through 6 or 8 speakers is blasphemy!!!!

2.1 stereo is maybe forgivable in some circumstances, but generally a stereo pair for music is the right choice for top quality.

the room is 13' x 11'

I just want them to be good! Will they be ample for TV & X box.

Would a better amp not be needed ? for all the connections i require

were would they be best ? position wise? forgot to put the wardrobe on, next to the tv. so i could put some on there?

For a room that size, quality bookshelf speakes like the ones mentioned will be PLENTY loud enough, and VERY good quality.

You can have at least 3 seperate items on an amp like that, one on the CD input, one on the tape and one on AUX.

Where would you put them?

And would I not be better off getting a higher quality amp of the bay , maybe 2nd hand.

And 2 speakers, and a centre one maybe?

That Cambridge is pretty reasonable amp. I've got an A5 driving some bookshelf speaks in my study with a CD Player and Tuner attached and an A4 in one of the spare rooms.

As far as I'm aware the A1 has four separate phono inputs which should be enough for what you'll be using in the near future. Of course you'll get more for your money going second hand.

As for positioning, you really want them to be either side of you when your listening so I'd either suggest that you have them at the end of the table or on either side of the TV, depends what you want to sound best.

Well you relly need the speakers to be at ear level for best quality, so maybe somthing like this: (you would need somthing at the foot of your bed to stand one of them on, a bedside table, spare speaker stand or somthing solid...
