As the title, I'm looking for an ultra-portable PC laptop.

12" or 13" Screen, should not weigh more than 1.5Kg with a decent battery life. Also needs to have a serial port built in if possible. Does not need to be very powerful as it will only be running some basic networking tools, although a good amount of RAM would be nice :)

Optical drives are nice, but not a requirement.

My budget is £400-500, so obviously I am looking probably at the second hand market, but I'm not that bothered by this as it is not going to be my main machine, just need something small and lightweight that I can carry around with my MBP to run some propriatiary software without having to use Bootcamp.

So far on the acution sites I have come across a lot of Thinkpad X31's that look like they would do what I want. Does anybody have any suggestions for other makes/models to be looking at? Or if indeed I might be able to get a brand new laptop for a little bit more that would meet my requirements?

IBM X31, used to have 1 for a couple of years, excellent laptop, built like a tank, best keyboard i've ever used and decent spec.

I have a really nice Dell m1210 XPS its an amazing little laptop and for around 600 quid its a bargain.

Really nice 12" screen 6+ hour battery life (intel graphics version only)

And its really light 1.5kg

Hows an Eeepc? :P

Under 1kg,
7inch screen, can have windows xp / linux on it.
Can support 2GB of ram.
No optical drive (you said not required)
3hours battery.
Even though its "only" a 900mhz proc (runs at 630mhz but can be restored easily) it runs most things very well.

And its £219 :)

VERY portable, pickup and carry about as if its not there in my bag.

Maybe?

If you're specifically after one with a serial port, you should look at the older p3 based ultraportables. The compaq N410c is the fastest one I can think of thats 12" and has a serial port - I think it has USB2 as well. It's also the only 12" P3 I know of right now that can have up to 1gb of ram. And there's the IBM X22/24 if you want a thinkpad specifically.

also, the X31 doesn't have a serial port on it - unless you use the port replicator - and my X31 died of motherboard failure :(

I'm looking at the same sort of thing at the mo, the X31s on auctions are tempting me but I'm hesitant to buy a second hand laptop...
