Was thinking of either upgrading the ram on my macbook to 2gb, or buying a 7200rpm drive, i was wondering what would give the most general performance boasts?

Depends what your using your MacBook for?

If you mean just overall performance boost, then upgrade the RAM. Increasing the HDD speed would boot up quicker, and be quicker with video work like encoding etc.

I just upped the ram in my Macbook from 1gb to 2gb and it's loads better, especially when you have quite a few apps open, or in my case, if you are running parallels or something.

Does the RAM increase affect battery life noticably? Mine will be looking at the same upgrade too soon for when I start having to use Matlab :)

Upgrade to 2GB, no doubt about that. :)

My friend's Macbook just flies on Vista as well!

Might improve battery life theoretically if it ever had to go to the HDD if the RAM was full.

If theres more stuff in RAM theres more the controller needs to "top up" with charge but I dont think its even worth trying to measure its that insignificant.
