Which upgrade should I get for Christmas?

Hi,

I'm hoping that with all of the different specs that everyone has that somebody might be able to offer some suggestions...

After all of my previous upgrades and trying to convince my wife that it's money well spent ;), she asked what I wanted for Christmas. I joked and said a 27" 3D monitor at £600 and although she gave me funny look initially, she seems to be ok with it now, (I know, I know - I wondered what's going on too - maybe she's feeling guilty about something ).

Anyway, she says I've got less than 3 weeks to decide now and I'm not sure what to go for. I'd like a 3D monitor and I was originally looking at the Samsung S27A950D or possibly the new Asus VG278H because of the 2nd generation 3D Vision, (although I haven't got a Nvidia card...yet).

The problem is that most reviews still talk about loads of crosstalk or bad backlight bleed on the LED monitors and although I like the idea of passive 3D, there seems to be viewing angle issues and there isn't a 120Hz passive panel available, (something which everybody comments on in a positive way when running 3D monitors in 2D). Also, I'm not sure whether I'll regret replacing my current monitor - a Dell U2410, even though it's smaller, it's always been great in games. I don't use it for anything professional like graphics design, I generally just use the PC for browsing and playing games like Skyrim, BF3, MW3 etc, so I could always sell it...

The other option is to choose an upgrade for the PC because I've been wanting a GTX 580 for a while, especially now there's a 3GB one, but with a single monitor, I probably wouldn't benefit that much. I've been putting off upgrading to Sandy Bridge and a new graphics card because Ivy Bridge and Kepler aren't that many months away and my system runs fairly well at the moment, (you can see the spec in my sig).

Alternatively, I could've gone for 3 x 24" monitors for surround gaming, but then I'd definitely need to upgrade my graphics card and as I'd like 3D ones, the only screens available at the moment of that size are the 3D Vision 1.0 monitors without lightboost.

I don't want to miss out on the chance of an upgrade when my wife is buying, :) so I'd really appreciate any suggestions on what other people would go for based on the fact that everything I'm looking at is going to be replaced by newer versions within the next few months and 3D technology still seems to be changing and there's no standard between monitors, maybe you're using one of the available models and are really happy with it / them?

Thanks very much!

Well if shes buying who can argue :p if I had your rig id get watercooling firstly its night n day from air cooled system even your fenrir is no match for a custom loop your rig deserves it. Then extra ram 3x 4 gb sticks these will both be transferable to a future ivybridge and keplar/ 79xx series set up which will be the only real upgrade to your rig for some time to come that will give any disernable perfomance gains real world. You have a very strong rig otherwise ssd and good raid solid monitor decent case and monster psu etc. upgrade to water your rig is begging for a custom loop you know it. once you have a ivy n next gen gfx card then look at more mature monitors with better LED bleed n view angles 3rd will have had more time to mature by then. A 24 inch dell is still a good Display.
My order priority for a x mas present would be as follows

Watercooling (custom loop) or (at least a dual 120mm rad all in one asetek/corsair)
Ram its so cheap a no brainer
Peripherals dont skimp on these so many people do its silly. gaming mouse (logitech g9) keyboard (any mechanical or high end macro based) mouse mat (razer ones with built in gel wrest) and sound card (xonar or xi-fi) and a solid set of speakers and headphones/ head set (sennheiser hd 5xx series or pc 360's) if on a tight budget get goldrings or audio technica . oh and the trusty xbox 360 wired usb contoller
Cpu motherboard and gfx card look at in April when ivy and 7 series will be out these will be a big step up from what you have now.
Then look at 2012 3d monitor line up. they should be out by april from most major brands after CES consumer electronics expo you will have all sorts of multi monitor set ups by then to choose from and 3d and led technology will have matured.

hope that helps wish my lady was so kind:D.

Thanks very much for all of the suggestions Farooq.

TBH I've never really thought about watercooling. This is for two reasons, one is that a friend of mine bought a Zalman Reserator 1 a few years ago and had to RMA it 3 times to get a working one and even then, the cooling wasn't much better than air even at stock, so that put me off. The second reason, (and I'm gonna get stick for this....) my system is running at stock, I've never tried overclocking it. I looked at a Gigabyte document a while back that supposedly could take an i7 920 D0 to 4Ghz, but when it talked about adjusting voltages to suit, that's where I gave up - I'm fine with everything else apart from changing voltage settings. That's why I like SB setups, they're so much easier to get a decent OC.

With regards to the other upgrade suggestions, I'd thought about getting some more memory but I've read a lot of posts about how you don't benefit going above 8GB especially with games, it's only worth it if you're using professional apps or photo editing etc.

Most of my peripherals aren't bad already, I've got a Saitek Eclipse II keybaord because I liked the blue backlight, (although I know the Logitech 'G' keyboards are probably better). I've also got a Razer Mamba wireless mouse, a gaming mouse mat and a Cambridge Soundworks EAX / DD 5.1 surround system through optical for the sound.

I'm using onboard sound, but I have thought about getting a Creative X-Fi card in the past. The only reason I haven't yet is because when I upgrade the mobo, I was thinking about getting one of the Gigabyte Sniper boards because they have the X-Fi onboard.

Lastly, I've got a Creative HS-1200 wireless headset which I don't use much because they get a bit uncomfortable after a while, but I've been looking at the new Razer Chimera 5.1 wireless headset that OcUK have in stock now....I'm just not sure how comfortable they are and how well they work for the high price.

I think most of my weekend will be spent looking at all of the products and posts on here because I'm running out of time. ;)

Thanks again for your suggestions, it all helps and I really appreciate it. :)

no problem mate after what you said your best upgrade will be a Asus Xonar Essence STX Sound Card or d2 equivalant they support dolby headphone which is far better than any 5.1 headset period. then pick up a set sennheiser pc 360 gaming headset it can be worn for hours on end the most comfortable headphones around they also share the same internals as the hd 598 but have the best quality mic to date. and are circumaural so they sit on your skull with zero pressure on the ears and are vented to allow heat to escape so your ears dont get sweaty or warm. get that and you will be a happy man on xmas morning.

on a side note xonar cards with dolby headphone support 192kHz bit rate and a headphone amp is the best set up you can get. far better than any xi-fi combo. team them up with a pc 360 and ur deep in audiophile terratory. you would literaly have to spend hundreds if not thousands to get a better audio experiance.

almost let you off the hook LEARN TO OVERCLOCK you have full forums and video guides to help you through.

oh and you never listed a xbox 360 controller its a must for pc gaming nowadays with all the console ports.

as for watercooling that zalman was a pile of you know what that you mate had. its not representative of watercooling in 2011 at all its came a long way and custom water is a god send for silence and our partners all enjoy a quiet pc I know my girl does. brownie points

still get water and overclock, soundcard and high end headset pc360

Right, I think you've convinced me...I've put the Asus Xonar Essence STX on the wishlist along with the PC 360. I looked at the 350 as well, but I prefer the 360 because they look more comfortable, (although that's not what the TechRadar review said - they thought they were uncomfortable for some reason).

The open design doesn't bother me because I won't be using them in the same room as a TV or anything and apparantly, the sound quality is better with the open design.

I'll have a look at some of the watercooling kits available and then I'll add those to the list. She wants a selection of things to choose from so there will be some form of surpise....I might keep an eye on the OcUK stock - she'll never know ;)

I forgot to mention in my last post that I've already got an Xbox 360 controller with the wireless adapter for Windows.

As I saw your OcUK review on the PC 360, I know you've got those. I don't know whether you've also got the Asus Xonar Essence STX as well, but I wondered whether you might know the following:

1. The sound card is classed as 2 channel by Asus so I'm assuming it encodes to a 5.1 signal to support DD etc. If I want to use my amp as well as the PC 360 and use an optical cable, is there an adapter supplied for optical or is it on the bracket itself and will the surround be as good as a normal 5.1 soundcard? (Sorry, I'm not that clued up on exactly how the signals are encoded / decoded).

2. As a lot of games use EAX for surround support, does it emulate that or will it revert to stereo only?

3. I can see that the spec of the Asus shows Dolby Headphone support, but I couldn't see that on the PC 360 spec. Is it definitely supported? The Chimera 5.1 that I was originally looking at had an optical input in the base to carry a surround signal, but the PC 360 uses a standard 3.5mm stereo jack, so I wasn't sure how it could differentiate between the different surround channels...

Thanks again Farooq. Also, I've been researching and will be giving the OC a go over the Christmas holidays! :D

I dont own a essence stx I have a xonar d1 and a fiio e7 amp.
eax is supported and can be ran normal or emulated depending on preferance and version of eax in game its not all the same there different verions of eax. all xonar cards will work and it has dolby digital and headphone as well as prologic etc. the pc 360 sennheisers support dolby headphone very well I have mine on 90 percent of the time only switch it off when im watching movies with the lady through the speakers. I run high end 2.1 speakers not a surround set but it will support up to 7.1 5.1 etc. you can switch its mode from the xonar audio center very easily.

errr think i got all your points let me know if i missed sumthing

Right, I've given her the model numbers and the links on OcUK, so now I've just got to wait....

Thanks a lot for all of your help and advice, it's very much appreciated!! :)
