I've not yet succeeded in having a topic turned into a poll, so there's no reason for the mods to acquiesce this time either. But if someone's feeling kind, please could they do so listing all the versions of W7 below + an option for those not planning on upgrading?

Anyway, here are the types from Wikipedia:

Windows 7 Starter
An option for "folks that will do very limited things with their PCs": the Windows Aero theme is not included, and it won't be available in a 64-bit variant. This edition will be available pre-installed on computers through system integrators or computer manufacturers.

Windows 7 Home Basic
Windows 7 Home Basic will be available in emerging markets such as Brazil, People's Republic of China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Thailand. It will not be available in countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, The Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom.Windows 7 Home Basic can run an unlimited number of applications, but some Aero options are excluded along with several new features.

Windows 7 Home Premium
This edition contains features aimed at the home market segment, such as Windows Media Center, Windows Aero and touch-screen controls.

Windows 7 Professional
This edition is targeted toward enthusiasts and small business users. It includes all the features of Windows 7 Home Premium, and adds the ability to participate in a Windows Server domain. Additional features include operating as a Remote Desktop server, location aware printing, Encrypting File System, and Presentation Mode.

Windows 7 Enterprise
This edition targets the enterprise segment of the market and will be sold through volume licensing to companies which have Software Assurance contract with Microsoft. Additional features include support for Multilingual User Interface (MUI) packages, BitLocker Drive Encryption, and UNIX application-support. Not available through retail or OEM channels, this edition will be distributed through Microsoft Software Assurance (SA). As a result it includes several SA-only benefits, including a license allowing the running of multiple virtual machines, access to Virtual PC Express, and activation via VLK.

Windows 7 Ultimate
Windows 7 Ultimate contains the same features as Windows 7 Enterprise, but unlike that edition it will be available to home users on an individual license basis. Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional users will be able to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate for a fee using Windows Anytime Upgrade if they wish to do so.Unlike Windows Vista Ultimate, the Windows 7 Ultimate edition will not include the Windows Ultimate Extras feature or any exclusive features.

E editions
In response to European Union antitrust investigations, all editions of Windows 7 will be sold in Europe without Internet Explorer included. These editions, which will be available in 23 languages, will include an "E" designation in the name, i.e. "Windows 7 Home Premium E". As Windows 7 E will not contain a web browser at all, Microsoft is planning on making Internet Explorer 8 available for free via CD, FTP and retail channels.

I'm most likely to go for Home Premium, getting anything more advanced isn't really that necessary for me at this point.

why does MS feel the need to make things so complicated

is there really any need to have 6 or 7 versions of the same OS ??

yes.
I wouldn't say it's hat complicated, I know we now a lot more. but a simpel read of what is included should make it easy.

will be Getting HP again.

E- is usless. basic is not available. Home preimum and Ultimate are the only two contenders for home use. and starter for things like Intel atom comps.

They should have just bought 2 versions out home and pro but ofcourse they are just enhancing their profit.

How is multiple version just about enhancing profit, surely it's just as much about offering consumer choice? I be the MS bashers would have had plenty to say if they just realeased windows 7 home and windows 7 business, loads of moaning about being forced to pay for flashy ultimate features that they didn't want.

They don't get the hardware subsidy that Apple get though do they.

Some sort of family license would be an interesting option though, I would certainly be willing to pay for it, allthough the people moaning about the number of versions would only complain more!

home premium for sure

http://bink.nu/news/windows-7-sku-feature-list.aspx

the only thing I semi wish that was in it is remote desktop

but tbh, i never remote to my gaming desktop, I have an xp pro laptop that I use as a server with RD, so that is fine

so many people get ultimate without using half of the features

imo, home premium should be £30-40, they'd get way more sales instead of people using dodgy copies, and wouldn't lose out in the corporate area

If I ever feel the need to upgrade, it would be home premium. But since Vista home premium does everything I need it to and does it well, there's no point in me "upgrading"

I normally go for the ultimate-type packages but never end up using the extra features, so I'll go Home Premium this time.
