My graphics card is a 290 - I want to use a VGA to VGA cable from my monitor to my PC but I also need a vga to dvi adapter as the graphics card doesn't have vga

Which type of dvi adapter do I need as I can see their are a couple of different ones

The 290 doesn't have the internal circuitry gubbins to produce a VGA signal, so you'll need an adapter that actually converts the digital signal into an analogue one (rather than just redirects the pins like most DVI-VGA adapters do).

You're looking at something that is an Active DVI-D to VGA adapter, like the StarTech DVI2VGAE. Beware some of the cheaper DVI-D to VGA adapters on the Rainforest or the Bay, as they are simply DVI-I to VGA adapters and won't work as the 290 doesn't have DVI-I ports. The alternative would be an Active Displayport to VGA adapter, or mini Displayport to VGA adapter if your 290 has mDP rather than DP output(s), like the DP2VGA2 or MDP2VGA.

I'd also suggest a DVI-D to VGA converter, the correct ones will usually have a box around the VGA where all the signal conversion is done. The DVI side plugs into the graphics card and the VGA side needs a VGA cable plugged in. The other end of the VGA needs to be pluged into the screen.

By the looks of it OCUK no longer stock these (I remember seeing some available last year), so you'll have to search the internet for it. The likes of Camac and Startech make them, the cheapest I've seen is £15. I'd link it, but it's another site. Just remember the VGA side is a box. Otherwise grab a HDMI splitter.

Console scrub.

Aww Stulid, don't be a meany-pants. Ever heard of console exclusives? The only reason most us own consoles lol. I have PS3 plugged into my monitor for playing MGS4, which has no PC version :(
