Which virtualisation software for PC (FREE)

Yet another vote for VirtualBox.
Installed Windows 7 in a 512Mb VM and it runs lovely.

i'm wanting to know a bit more about vmware

i've got a pc here i want to install several o/s (xp, server 2003 and windows 7). how do-able is that ?

how would i go about doing it ?

Best bet would be to install ESXi which is free from VMWare and take it for a test drive.

Download the ISO, burn to CD and slap it in your spare box - it will delete everything and take over the drive.

Download the client software (a link is given after you install ESXi) and you set everything up from your normal machine - add some memory, how many cores, disk etc and then either upload an ISO to the machine and create your VM or stick the DVD in the drive.

Does VirtualBox support Intel VT extensions? I know that Virtual PC 2007 does (and VMWare I would wager).

VMWare certainly does. I've tried all three and found VMWare to be by far the best, mainly because it allows you to allocate two CPU cores to one VM and neither of the others do.
