looking for virus software to buy, I have tried loads of free ones but in my opinion there free for a reason, they never find viruses or if they do they never remove it fully, i was looking at norton 360 but im not sure i generaly dont like norton any ideas?

I have tried the following retail apps Avira, Kaspersky and Nod32

All are very good in regards to detection and removal and light on the system

I use Kaspersky myself but any of the above should do the job fine.

Regardless with what one you choose I would install the free version of SuperAntispyware and MalewareBytes as a second layer of defence against maleware

nod32 is excellent
kaspersky is also regarded highly, but personally i'm used to the nod32 layout now

DO NOT USE NORTON... Agghhh

[edit] No actually please use Norton because it's extra work for PC techicians when it all goes wrong [/edit]

Have you tried Avast? I've been using it for years and I install it on customer PCs by default. I've never had any complaints.

heh :p

my old it manager, who self titled himself 'the it director' (which was always shot down by the other real directors) used to say 'anti-norton virus'

man that guy was a tool, he knew bugger all about IT

We use and re-sell NOD32 at work and imho its the best on the market at the moment. I use Kaspersky at home (only because my license has not ran out yet) and its as good as NOD32 :)

hmm

am i right in thinking antivir by default is just an on-demand scanner?

ie doesn't hog resources all the time etc..

I have been using Norton 360 v2.0 for the past month and apart from having to disable on access scanning when I'm benching with Orthos, it has worked a treat.

Very light footprint compared to other versions.

I only installed it as it was given to me with 3 licences by someone who already had a copy.

It'll generally scan files when read/written but mine sometimes does a brief scan in the background. I've never noticed a reduction in performance.

It's just the noisy Hitachi drives clunking away that annoy me
