Which virus software

Been using Avira AntiVir for a few days and it seems half decent. Don't like the fact a pop-up appears every time it updates itself but it's better than AVG 8 which caused no end of trouble with corrupt and failed updates.

I'm using Avira AntiVir Premium.

Thanks to TrialPay, it cost me all of £1.50 for a years subscription :D

Thanks to TrialPay I got it for £0.00 :p:D

hmm

am i right in thinking antivir by default is just an on-demand scanner?

ie doesn't hog resources all the time etc..

AntiVir is a real-time scanner just like the others, but it is light. It's one of (if not the) best AVs at the moment, and reminds me of how NOD32 used to be.

To the OP: Free does not necessarily mean bad. Many times, quite the opposite. A lot of freeware is better than the paid-for alternative (I mean come on, you used Norton for your example lol). I have licenses for NOD32, Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 and I'm still using Avira AntiVir free on most of my machines. The only one that isn't using it, has the premium version ;)

DO NOT USE NORTON... Agghhh

[edit] No actually please use Norton because it's extra work for PC techicians when it all goes wrong [/edit]
Actually, it all has changed. Try a 2009 version, it's very light on system resource and the installation took less than 3-5 mins and that was on AMD 2400+ XP system! TBH, the interface feels snapper and faster than avast or AVG!

Completely different from an old, bloated & system-resource heavy Norton software which I used to hate with a passion.

I have tried the whole gamut of antivirus software, and the two biggest contenders i've found are kaspersky (9) and nod32 (3) Nod32 is lighter than kav, although KAV is updated more frequently. Antivir gave a lot of false positives and deleted some system files. I'd say nod is lightenss matters more than detection.
