Hi guys just wondering what vista ppl will be using, I have 32bit XP and got Vista 32bit but thinking of using 64bit vista, isnt that the way forward?

what you guys gonna use?

I had a fair play with x64 but settled on x86 because of x64's compatibility problems. It will get a lot better further down the line, but atm it's quite unusable as an everyday OS if you plan to game on it (IMO).

One hardware website I was reading recommended 2Gb Ram for x86 and double that for x64.. so I would go for x86! Have tried both, 32bit seems faster. Not much can take advantage of 64-bit atm.

A lot of things do work, but try installing Battlefield 2142 and it'll just laugh at you.

It's upto the game developers to write patches to solve the compatibility problems.

The majority of things do work.
When it came to WinXP I was never going to use the 64bit version.
XP 64bit was an after thought, something to keep the AMD processor owners happy as they had a shiney new CPU and no OS to run on it.

Vista on the other hand was built with 64bit in mind - sure it comes in 32bit flavours too, but 64 was always there from the beginning.

All my hardware is pretty new and upto date - Conroe based around Intel 965.
4GB DDR2-800 RAM, 7800 based graphics, Xi-Fi Music, so I know all my hardware is supported under a 64bit environment.
I've spent the better part of this afternoon checking and getting drivers ready.
Most applications I run will also run fine under 64bit as will the majority of games I play.

I'll be using Vista 64bit from the off - any performance hit I take as an early adopter will be negated as drivers mature over the next month or so.

As I said in another thread, we've been reviewing the gold version for over a week now and everyone working on it is now using only the 32-bit version. There are a lot of compatibility problems on Vista 64-bit and the lack of drivers is a real pain, come January things will be better as every company who releases Vista drivers has to release 64-bit ones too if they want them Vista Ready. None of its Microsoft's fault mind you.

Oh and for those asking about RAM - I would say they are right, 1GB of memory on 32-bit isn't enough now, you will see 68/75% is used up when just running a couple of Apps, 2GB is a must for smooth Vista work and a vital must for gaming which is slower than XP anyway thanks to the Sound changes.

4GB is also vital for the 64-bit version in our view. Our review is covering a load of RAM setups from 1GB to 4GB to testing the slightest thing that Windows Vista ReadyBoost does (I'm running a 4GB ReadyBoost cache with 2GB ram on 32-bit vista for best performance at the moment). Our review should be up Monday and its over 50 pages long.

"Lot of compatability problems in Vista 64bit"

Name me 10 popular applications that will not run under 64bit Vista

I don't know if it is relevant to the above posts, but I ditched XP64 because of the lack of support for my pda, digital camera and other half's phone.. it's these things that can be a bit of a pain when they aren't supported. Okay, I also have my work laptop running standard XP but it was a PITA having to fire it up to use as an intermediary device so I could dump my digital pictures and sync my pda/phones as opposed to just connecting them straight with the main pc in the study.

I don't remember saying "popular" applications - I said compatibility problems, try running a lot of PDA software, smartphone stuff, camera software, some dvd playback software, various games etc...thats compatiblity problems, compatibility means more than just poplular applications that SHOULD already be supporting 64-bit.

16-bit applications as we all know are not supported at all, but some older applications that are 32-bit still used legacy application installers now won't run. Some new 64-bit applications will need to adhere to the new Windows Vista application standards in order to run correctly on these versions. That means that even some software written specifically for XP x64 might not work correctly..we've encountered one so far which isn't too much of a big deal.

I never said don't use Vista 64bit, but for the majority 32bit is still the better option for less hassle. I think Vista 64 bit is an excellent OS, but right now I won't use it as some of my camera software doesn't work, my phone software didn't work and some drivers were not working well on it.

I was hoping that you would be able to give me some reason not to go 64bit :)
I've been running various versions of Vista 32bit for ages but have avoided 64bit.
I was hoping you'd be able to give me a few applications I need that I wouldn't be able to use.

Probably 64-bit. I've been using x64 for a good 12 months and like it loads. There are hardly any programs I use which have issues - the Acrobat PDF printer is one exception. Which reminds me, I must download the trial of Acrobat 8 to see if that is x64 friendly now.

I've been using x64 RC2 since it was released and I've not really had any problems at all.

All my drivers work ok, and all of my applications work.

The only issue is some apps like PS CS2 and Java not liking Aero effects, but I don't think thats x64 related.

Nope not x64 related, same in 32-bit too. Patches are on the way for those pretty quickly though which is a good thing!

I'll try to get a list up of software we have all tested on Vista on both 64 and 32Bit to see what works, what has problems and what doesn't run.

damn i only have a gig of ram, thinking of getting some faster 1gb ram like corsair XMS cl2-2-2-5 stuff and sell the kingston

2GB of cheaper 3-3-3-8 RAM will be much better than 1GB of expensive 2-2-2-5 RAM.
