Hi,

Now that I am all grown up and everything, I want to fill my drinks cupboard with some quality drinks... I know nothing about either Vodka or Whiskey, but I know I like expensive ones :o

Grey Goose Vodka I know I like, but I can't seem to find it anywhere around here.... Any suggestions on alternatives?

Whiskey I haven't got a clue.

In both cases, I am looking for something that is a pleasasnt drink straight/ with ice, as I can use cheaper varieties for mixing :)

Thanks

Laphroig whisky (ey) If that's how you spell it is very nice.

Glenmorangie is a good one aswell. All different cask types for glenmorangie, just whatever takes your fancy. Can't tell you about vodka, vile stuff in my opinion. :)

42 below is good, and a cheaper alternative would be stolichnaya

or like me find a friend who works in Kazakhstan and get them to bring back excellent vodka for little money :D

Smirnoff is often a safe bet for vodka, which in any case should be stored in the freezer.
Absolut is also quite decent. You should be able to get Grey Goose on line.

As for whisk(e)y, I can only really speak of bourbon as I'm not really a malt fan. Jim Beam is a good staple for a sipping drink but Makers Mark is better.

Smirnoff/Absolut is exactly what I'm trying to get away from! :p

Ye russian standard is nice, I can drink straight. You may also like zubrowka, straight its ok but with apple juice and ice its mmm hmmm!

You should also try to trace some Armadale vodka. Stolichnaya gold would look quite good also, but probably expensive in the UK.

I always forget to make the notes of names. But polish and Ukraine vodka (Russian is a close 3rd) is heavenly. Always get family friends to bring me back bottles when they go to such area. The request, bring what the locals drink.

Ciroc Vodka .... ultra smooth

I remember when Russian Standard (Russky Standart) wasn't available in the UK... only place I could get it from was Harrods. But even then it was good value at ~£20 a bottle. :)

I adore Wisniowka and always keep it in the freezer.

Whisky is so much a metter of personal preference. I love a smokey one, such as Islay, but my beloved OH prefers something less smokey but with a bit more kick. There is an enormous difference between single malts and blends too. It may be a case of trying some out and see how you get on. We went to Scotland on holiday a while ago and went to a specialist whisky shop. They sorted us out with loads of minatures so that we could try different whiskies without enormous outlay.

Maybe we should organise a OcUk whisky tour of the distilleries?
