which way is north?

>>> That way.

It's pretty simple, get the location of the sunrise, location of the sunset, get the midpoint between them then you know that is south and the other direction is north.

(I know some astronomer is going to come in with some sort of earth wobble theory)

EDIT:

Another way, if you just know the time of the sunrise and sunset, get the midpoint in time between them then point the hour hand of your watch at the sun, halfway between the mid-time and the hour hand will be south, opposite direction is north.

At night you can find Polaris.
During the day you can estimate based on sunrise.
Or, walk in each direction and pick the one that "feels like walking uphill".
;)

Get a paper clip, and straighten it. Then get a styrofoam cup, tear the bottom out. Rub said paper clip with a magnet (fridge one works, has to be half-decent though) along the side from end to end, then put it on the styrofoam cup bottom and put that on a small saucer or plate filled with water. Observe paper clip pointing north.

If it's an office argument I'm sure you can find all these small items!
