Hi all been reading the forum for a few weeks and have just joined. ive recently sold two pc's a athlon 64 3000 (clawhammer one) and a 2160 based core2duo so i have £250 to put to a new build, ive already bought a 22'' acer monitor and a 1tb hdd. The problem i have is i dont know wether to go intel or amd and want somehing thats going to last 4 maybe 5 yrs + with maybe a processor upgrade along the way. The main things i'll be using it for are playing all the command and conquer games and any future releases, supreme commander 1 & 2 when its out and add-ons, world in conflict, bit of photoshop, dvd encoding and web surfing.
i dont want to be spending huge amounts if not seeing any benifits ie would i7 be overkill, would intergrated video be a good idea until direct x 11 appears?

thanks in advance :)

he says he has 250£ to put a build together

but he also asks if i7 would be overkill. You wouldn't get an i7 build for that kind of money.

So I think he meant he has an extra £250 to put towards a new build. Although I could be wrong there.

Welcome to the forums. :)

To be brutally honest, you are not going to get anything better than the E2160 rig that you sold for £250. To have a pc that will last for around 5 years you will have to significantly increase the budget.

sorry guys yeah i have £250 to put to the build, its not just £250 build. Id thought about i7 and phenom II am3 but from what ive read amd are doing a new socket g34 (something like that) 2010/11 ,intel are bringing out i5,which it said cant be upgraded to a i7 because of the different socket. i was hoping to just do a processor upgrade in a year or two like am2/am2+ owners are doing and i was think if i got a board with intergrated graphics i could get a direct x11 card later in the year. do i need a i7 to run the those games and for the encoding not to bothered about having the fasted bench mark scores or a few second slower on encoding, would the i7 successor just slot into a i7 motherbord? would something like a phemonII 720be or 810 do for now then get a faster x4 am3 when they come out? is there a am3+ on the way as one of the biostar motherboards specs it?

thankyou all for your swift replys much appreiated

where to turn to

oh have a dvd writer as well so dont need that. i have a case (a midi tower)from a pII 333 celeron build could that be used?

tbh like the guys said above if you want future proof get an i7 AMD change sockets way too much but i dont think u can get an x58 mobo with onboard graphics can you???

sadly futureproof cost more :( £250 is a netbook or cheap pc. If you really want it so it lasts a couple of years without struggling its probably better to invest abit more money into it. Double the budget (sell the cat) :)

Im sure you can get an ok skeleton system running for £250. then upgrade some parts in the future.. but at that budget forget i7. maybe i5 is right where you want to be? wait and see do some research

OK if i increase the budget, since amd have just released socket am3, would getting a x3 720be or x4 810 system with onboard ati 3300 128mb be a good idea then upgrading to quicker x4 9xx and direct x11 card in the future or like you say get a i7 system. Are i7 45nm chips? if so would i7 32 nm or 22nm successor just be able to drop right in or would it be new socket meaning motherboards and perhaps other stuff to be changed
