Which way would use the most fuel ?

Do you have to take a lot of stuff with you to work? Work tools, electrical tools etc?

Depends a bit on where you are going as well - if it is say an out of town location without proper footpaths, etc. it might be far safer to drive even though not long distance wise.

Most modern cars tell you not to sit and idle the engine, mine does.

Can't you just take a longer route to work?

I have a mate who warms his car before driving it. It's stupid and I've told him so.

It comes from the old days before automatic chokes. Before demisters and electric window heaters.

Just get in the thing and drive it.

It's sort of the point of an automatic choke, demisters and electric window heaters.

But am guessing with such short trips the battery's would never get enough charge...

It bad enough trying keep enough charge in the battery's of just a normal car/motorbike

Would you not be able to plug it in each night?

I work on heavy plant machinery and sometimes on are trucks

And many of the manufactures say to wait till the engines and hyd systems are up to temp before using

Lorrys you can't drive straight away as you need to wait for the air to build up enough pressure to release the air brakes

Are two Volvo shovel loaders and one are fork lifts will hardly move anywhere till they have warmed up

And are Hammel shredders sometimes come up with a oil filter light warming if used before there warmed up enough to thin the oil

Do you use any of these vehicles for your 2 mile commute?

If not, what is the relevance?

No

but there still engines where the manufactures have said it best to warm them up at idle before using..

Perhaps a full electric car then? Perfect for short trips like this. Better than an engine working from cold all the time, putting the most wear on the engine, creating the most emissions and using the most fuel.

A full electric car is no good to me as my car is parked outside on a public street :( so no way of charging it
Plus my car is not parked at my work place during working hours (We have a rented parking area about 100yards up the road from my work place) so can't charge it there

Ride! It'll take 10 minutes, you have a cycle so you don't even have to pay any more, infact you'll save and get fit.

I cycle to work every so often and my work is 11 miles away, 2 1/2 miles is literally nothing ya lazy git :D

Do you mean 'our'? Very confusing sentences.

If you're doing 8-10k a year you're using it for a lot more than your 2.5 mile commute.
I wouldn't worry about it not warming up every time, just as long as it does often enough, which if you're doing 8K it must do.
2.5 * 2 * 356 = 1825. What are you doing for the other 6k?

EDIT sorry I realised your original question was about using fuel. It's just others started discussing the downsides of short journeys. I'd say just drive it and don't worry.
