I have LOTS of family and holiday photos which I would like to share online for friends and family to see.

I currently have the originals on CD and they are also saved on Photobox.

I have tried using the share service on Photobox which although great, I would prefer something a little more polished and customisable. Dont get me wrong, Photobox is awesome at Printing photos, which is what its there for.

I have used Picasa's web page creation tool and although it looks great, it would be nice for people to have access to the originals so they can save, print and do as they wish.

I have no problem paying an annual fee for a service if it looks good to cover hosting etc.

I hope SCAM doesnt mind, but I looked at his BLOG here:

http://2m2l.net/index.php

That is something I like the look of? Is that something "off the peg" or custom made?

I do have 10GB of web space at my disposal so hosting images myself would not be a problem if there is some specific web photo gallery software or blogging client I could use. Am also open to the idea of using a dedicated service for a monthly/annual fee.

Thanks all for any help.

EDIT:

Just read the sticky.

The option of setting up my own server within Windows seems good also as my IP is semi static anyway.

Hey. My site is pretty much a standard installation of PixelPost. I think the most major change i made was to make the grey theme the default. There are a million themes up for download too.

Pixelpost is good, but it isnt a gallery software. You can assign categories, but no subcategories which is a shame. If you want to upload different size/versions of images i'm not sure it would be for you. I've never used Flickr but it does seem to give you the opportunity to change the sizes of peoples pictures, so i assume you upload the largest and it resizes it for you? There's a lot of people here who use it so i guess someone will explain. I guess Flickr isn't particularly private though -- it's more of a 'social' photo site. I probably wouldnt feel right about uploading lots of family pics etc. there for example. :)

EDIT: As you seem to be willing to have a go at installing some type of gallery software, you could have a look at this thread. I reckon your best bet is giving one of those a go on your webserver. I personally wouldnt bother with an at-home server. The speed wont be great and it'd end up being more hassle than its worth!

If you find any other bits of software worth trying - please add them to the thread and I'll add them to the first post.

At the moment I'm going with Lightbox as I can just create a page however I want it and forget using the gallery software. :D

Will do.

After a quick browse, Imagevue looks amazing. With the right amount of time, I think I could create a very nice web gallery.

Hope you dont mind me hijacking your thread a little but I'm after some software too. I'm looking for something similar to coppermine (which I use for my own site), which allows multiple users to sign up and post images for themselves in a similar way to coppermine, and then having an admin account that can delete photos and comments etc. I'm just interested in seeing what else is out there before committing to coppermine on this new website.

thanks
